Upcoming Event: Absalon @ Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (RTM)

Absalon_13

For this year's Rotterdam Art Weekend, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will be featuring an exhibition dedicated to the late artist Absalon. His work, which consisted mainly of living cells constructed from white painted wood, is featured most prominently in Cellules, a set that is reminiscent of art movements of the past such as Bauhaus, De Stijl, Le Corbusier, and Russian constructivism. What made Absalon's work differ from these movements however was how he designed the cells -- each one based on the dimensions of his own body in an effort to describe "a bastion of resistance against a society that prevents me from becoming what I must become." A selection of videos Absalon worked on while creating Cellules will also be shown, all of which pay homage to constructivism and architecture, but also performance art of the '60s and '70s. Absalon's work is regarded by art lovers as highly influential although he is still mostly unknown among the general public. This upcoming exhibition will be a chance for the uninitiated to see his major contributions to the art world.
