Alexander Wang Brings His Signature Edge To Tokyo
Alexander Wang continued his ambitious Asian expansion by opening a pop-up shop in Tokyo at the Japanese department store Isetan Wednesday. WWD quotes the designer describing the store as a "tricked out basement," with living areas showcasing a quilted leather punching bag, a leather hammock, and a cargo net exterior. Open until October 23, the pop-up, located in Isetan's Shinjuku store, is stocked with an impressive array (more than 35 pieces) of exclusive items. The designer utilized locally-sourced materials and inspiration to create new pieces as well as fresh iterations of best-sellers, like his celebrity-favorite Marti backpack (Kate Bosworth is a fan). The bag will be available in canvas sourced from Osaka and leather from Wang's 2009 fall collection. Other limited-edition pieces include essential T-shirts made of rare Japanese cotton, plus a USB stick loaded with a music playlist in collaboration with DJ Steve Aoki.
In addition to the pop-up shop, the designer also debuted a special installation at Dover Street Market Ginza. Comme Des Garçons' sleek store, home to an Alexander Wang shop-in-shop, unveiled a new installation featuring black inflatable pool toys and long-haired mannequins.
