Art Toronto 2012: It's An International Thing
The number 13 is traditionally considered to be unlucky, but in the case of Art Toronto it just might turn out to be the opposite. This fall, Art Toronto, which is Canada's only international art festival, will celebrate its 13th anniversary, and it will be widening its focus farther than ever before. From October 26 through 29, the Metro Toronto Convention Centre will host the Toronto International Art Fair's baker's-dozen edition, featuring work from scores of galleries all over the world and an equally intercontinental list of guest appearances.
Just a couple of the special programs included in Art Toronto 2012 will be Focus ASIA, which — true to its name — puts a spotlight on cutting-edge Asian art and displays some of the most important work emerging from a wide selection of Asian galleries. Continuing the international theme, Beyond Geography emphasizes multiculturalism, gathering together a multimedia assortment of pieces by Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, FX Harsono, Kan Xuan, Jompet Kuswidananto, Li Ran, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Sarindar Dhaliwal, to name just a few. Add in a guest list including everyone from curator Bilijana Ciric to Canadian Art editor Richard Rhodes, and you've got an art festival to remember. Those wanting to get in on the October 25 benefit/sneak preview should scope out the details on the website.
