Footsteps Create Public Art in China

In response to an increased number of cars hitting Chinese roadways, the country's Environmental Protection Foundation teamed up with creative agency DDB China to promote walking. What they conceived is an interactive public art campaign that relies on pedestrians to paint trees as they cross city streets.

Roads in 15 cities have been outfitted with expansive paintings of leafless trees, situated between sponge pads covered in green paint. When people walk through one of the 132 installations, the branches are instantly embellished with greenery. Close to 4 million people have participated in the project thus far.
