Grimes Comes Into Focus On 'Visions'

grimespic

No, her music has nothing to do with grime. Canada's Claire Boucher, better known by her artistic alias, Grimes, has spent the last several years crafting evocative electronic pop with an ethereal touch that doesn't detract from its danceability. And now she's got a new album in the works — Visions is set for an April 21 release on the 4AD label, in partnership with Canadian imprint Arbutus Records.

Grimes says her new album was "conceived in a period of self-imposed cloistering during which time I did not see daylight." But if you take a sneak peek at the album via the MP3 for the track "Genesis," you'll quickly discover that it's not some sort of moody, murky, subterranean sound she's whipped up for Visions, but rather a heady rush of nocturnal neon, sounds that seem lit from within and powered by a blend of synth pop, IDM, and even the occasional Brian Eno-meets-Enya ambient tinge. You can stream the rest of the album at NPR. Guests on the record include Doldrums and Majical Cloudz, but the visions you hear emanate first and foremost from the magical realm of Ms. Boucher herself, who will be touching down on our earthly plane long enough to play a batch of live dates in North America (along with Born Gold) and Europe in February and May, respectively.
