Kahlo: Frida's Choice for Luxurious Basics [Gallery]
Taking its name from beautiful enigma Frida Kahlo, Sydney-based Kahlo is a covetable line of high-end, timeless basics. At the helm are designers Rachelle Sinclair and Fay Ogunbadejo, a powerful pair on a mission to deliver striking, clean pieces comprised of only the most luxurious materials. We recently managed to pry the designing duo away from their work for just long enough to discuss the past, present and future of the sumptuous Kahlo.
How did Kahlo come to be?
Rachelle Sinclair and Fay Ogunbadejo: After meeting at fashion week we started talking about goals, values and aspirations, discovering we had similar ideas... To create an aspiring brand that prides itself on quality pieces that are made and received with love. We really wanted a name that would represent our aesthetic and philosophy.
What's the connection between your line and Frida Kahlo?
Frida Kahlo was an amazingly strong and creative woman who was beautiful but a little androgynous. This inspired us as we share the same values. We wanted a timeless, strong name with longevity that appears clean and striking on paper.
How do your Australian roots influence the line?
We both live and are based in Sydney, Australia. We take pride in supporting Australian fashion and are adamant our clothes and design are of the highest quality. We source most of our fabrics in Australia and our pieces are made here locally in Sydney with love and care. We believe the Kahlo girl appreciates this!
What's unique about Kahlo?
Kahlo fills a gap in the market for high-end, timeless pieces. We pride ourselves on making beautiful, quality pieces without any fuss. Our unique aesthetic is alluring, distinctive pieces, skillfully constructed yet wearable with a slightly androgynous edge. The pieces consist of sharp silhouettes, clean structures, amazing quality and luxury fabrics.
Who do you design for? Describe the woman who loves Kahlo.
Ultimately, we design for ourselves. We explore textures, colors and clean silhouettes that represent our style and vision. The Kahlo girl is strong and creative. She follows local, as well as international fashion trends, but ultimately dresses for herself.
Describe Kahlo in just one word.
Simple.
