Label Love: Cora Groppo

CGFP

Everyone who is anyone or knows anyone who has ever been to Buenos Aires knows that it is one of the sexiest cities, not only in South America, but on the planet. Aside from its inherently sexy state, it is chock-a-block with gob-smackingly good looking people.

This Euro-influenced city, often referred to as the "Paris of South America,” is the capital and largest city of Argentina, and the second-largest metropolitan area in South America, after Brazil’s Sao Paulo. With a population of thirteen million, the city has the busiest live theater industry in Latin America, is home to Teatro Colón, an internationally rated opera house and was appointed as the first UNESCO City of Design in 2005.

Clearly, this big, bold, super sexy, design driven and culturally rich city, naturally lends itself to a fab fashion scene. So, it comes as no surprise that Buenos Aires hosts many fashion events, most notably the Buenos Aires Fashion Week, which has spawned many a style star, one of which is the incomparable Cora Groppo.

Cora Groppo is a dramatic and sophisticated line with an urban and edgy aesthetic. The idea behind each of Groppo’s collections is to find a building resource to reinvent the silhouette. The once architecture student is forever in search of the perfect fit and form.

Her architecturally driven designs are known for their strong shapes, monochromatic hues, and meticulous tailoring. Similar to the city she lives in, she takes the classic before her and reinvents it with that modern interpretive twist, forever enhancing the body and the silhouette. Her garments reflect a thorough understanding of the body’s form and structure.

In terms of textures, Groppo continues to explore, blending materials that belong to different worlds, like voile and leather, satin and knitting, creating a unique composition and structure, tied in to an overall concept for a collection, all executed through her love of layers where the body and the form are forever celebrated.

As a graduate in fashion design from the University of Buenos Aires, Groppo began her career working for renowned Argentine labels like Vitamina and Yagmour. In collaboration with Ramiro Lopez Serrot, Groppo launched her own label Cora Groppo in 2003.

True to the city, her Euro-influenced style and aesthetic has done well in markets around the world, particularly in Europe as she has shown at London’s Fashion Week, in Madrid and most recently alongside several other Argentinean designers at New York’s Fashion Week this past spring.

Forever on trend without being trendy, she has always been a commercial and couture cut above the fashion pack. Groppo was one of the first to open a store in the now uber-trendy Palermo SOHO in Buenos Aires on the corner of El Salvador St. and Armenia. Her second store opened in the arty and edgy Recoleta neighborhood.

You can slip in to one of Groppo’s jackets, which are known as her personal favorite to design. Her line is widely accessible as she now retails in fine luxury boutiques worldwide, as well as in her two boutiques in Buenos Aires and her one in Rome. Her next quest is Asia and America. We see world domination. Stay tuned…
