Label Love: Viktoria + Woods

VIKTORIA AND WOODS

Australian fashion label Viktoria + Woods is a collaboration between Margie Woods and Lisa Reynolds; a partnership that was formed after the stylish duo worked alongside each other at The Lofft Fashion Agency in Melbourne.

From the brand’s early days of producing boutique contemporary knitwear, the label has grown into an iconic Australian label focused on creating quality fabrications, functional and contemporary styling and designs that fit the lifestyles of the brand’s seemingly effortless and chic clientele.

Sociéte Perrier caught up with Lisa and Margie from Viktoria + Woods to find out a little more about the budding Aussie brand.

What was the inspiration behind the brand?
Lisa Reynolds: We aim to create simple, functional, and timeless staples for women that strongly reflect modern lifestyles and current fashion trends.

How did the brand name Viktoria + Woods come about?
It was named after the two original founders. We thought the name had a strong sense of sophistication and a timeless ring to it — which was in line with our brand inspiration.

What sets Viktoria + Woods apart from other Australian brands?
There is a true functionality and wearablity to our products. Viktoria + Woods pieces are timeless, and quality is always a priority. We are Australian made, and try to use natural fibers wherever possible. We truly hope to be seen as an essential brand in any woman’s wardrobe.

What are a few signature items synonymous with Viktoria + Woods?
The long line, slim fit baby wool cardi – a signature piece that really launched the brand.  Since inception, the Viktoria + Woods brand has become very well known and loved for its range of knitwear. However in the last few years we have focused on developing our jacketing category; in particular leathers, coats and blazers - our clientele can’t seem to get enough of these newer designs.

If you could shop anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
That’s easy – Australia. We design to suit our lifestyle, or weather, and we have such talented designers. We are also lucky, being a season behind the rest of the world; we can take inspiration from the best of international trends and interpret them into our own designs.

Name your favorite brand aside from Viktoria + Woods.
Right now, we love Stella McCartney. Her designs are luxe, modern and have such a high-end, luxury feel; all the while maintaining an ethical approach to the fashion industry (her range is completely leather free). Unlike many of her industry peers in high-end category, she bucks the trend by maintaining such high ethical standards, yet she is just as respected and valued as any. I find her approach of staying true to her core values incredibly refreshing and so inspiring.

Who is the Viktoria + Woods customer?
The core age group would be 20 to 35, however our market really does vary. The common link of our clientele is that they are boutique shoppers who support independent labels, and value quality, designer elements and individuality.

What influences the brand?
Current trends, travel, and shifts in how we dress. For example, in the last 12 to 18 months there has been a huge shift towards tailoring, an element we have really embraced and has become a huge influence on our ranges. This influence has lead to a perfect transition for our brand. However, we always incorporate ease of wear, and functionality into our tailoring.

Tell us about your favorite Viktoria + Woods range.
To be honest, every new range becomes our favorite. We have just finalized "Rhapsody," our Winter 13 collection which drops into store in April/May 2013. This is a milestone collection for us as we reach our ten year anniversary. We were also fortunate enough to have Romy Frydman from Style Me Romy shoot the campaign and look book – which has been her professional photographic debut. Romy has been styling our look books for the last four seasons and she has an incredible ability to bring out the true essence of our brand.

How would you describe fashion in Australia?
Relaxed and carefree but still refined and thought out.

What look you are you loving at the moment?
Suiting. Shorts suits, oversized bombers (but with a sophisticated timeless twist).

Name three fashion items you couldn't live without?
A blazer (finishes my outfit everyday), a pair of black skinny leg jeans and a designer bag.
