New Zealand Names Its Cocktail World Cup Team
Eight mixologists vied for a spot on New Zealand's 42BELOW Cocktail World Cup team last night, and three have secured a trip to the competition. Barney Toy of Auckland's Suite Bar impressed the judges with his Reaching New Heights drink, a vodka and wine cocktail inspired by explorer Sir Edmund Hillary. Toy will be joined at the eighth annual event by two Wellington bartenders, Guy Jacobson from the Hippopotamus Bar and Giancarlo Jesus of the Hawthorn Lounge. Jacobson upped the competition with a ginger-infused drink made in a teapot, while Jesus added a kick of Swedish Punsch to his concoction. The World Cup starts on September 3, culminating in a grand finale on September 7. Hoping to win New Zealand their first title, the gents will be working on a signature drink until then. Perhaps they'll let us know if they need some taste testers.
