Injecting garage with more rave energy and colour than can possibly be healthy, Hot City – DJ Haus and DJ Benz – have been consistently ripping up dancefloors with their infectious take on UKG. The duo have put together a mix for us that perfectly demonstrates their demonic dance mettle, conjuring up images of the very finest sweaty basement raves – try and resist the groove at your peril. We caught up with DJ Haus for a chat about mixes and dance floor bangers.
Tell us about your mix.
DJ Haus: It’s a selection of tracks we play out in the club – bangers, nothin’ more, nothing less!
Do you try and make mixes that reflect the Hot City sound or do you see mix-making as a separate exercise?
Well, Hot City is about club music – nothin’ more, nothin’ less. Clubland has changed and is an ever-evolving vibe which we ride.
Would you say that Hot City encapsulates both of your individual likes and experiences as separate DJs?
Hmm, depends. Hot City has morphed and shape-shifted into many forms and styles over the last four-five years – that’s a hell of a long time in the internet-land of now. Our ethos is to chuck it all at the wall, nothing sticks anyway so we just keep chucking!
It’s a great label but some people were surprised when you guys signed to Moshi Moshi. Is it ever weird being the hardest dance act on a predominantly alt. pop label?
Yes, very weird, the whole situation is very bizarre and surreal. It seems to work in our favor that people think we are The Chemical Brothers or Leftfield.
Did you ever see Hot City as a garage revival act?
No, UKG never went away. It is just in fashion now, it will then go away. Hot City will morph again. Shit stays the same.
Tell us about any new material you’ve got coming up:
We’ve put our heart and soul and two years into our debut LP. That is the only focus we have.
