Société Perrier DJ Mix: Jakwob
UK producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist Jakwob started out playing in jazz and death metal bands before moving into producing and DJing electronic tracks. His blend of euphoric dubstep and electro has proved a big hit with audiences, including several high-profile remixes for singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding.
His Société Perrier DJ mix begins as a lo-fi, downtempo affair, progressing to explore harder, skittish dubstep – peppered with jazz and club sounds – before finishing with the grimy stylings of rapper Kano, in his melancholy collaboration with Jakwob, “Please.”
We caught up with Jakwob to discuss his mix.
Tell us about your mix.
Jakwob: It’s a pretty chilled mixture. Lots of bits I don’t get to play out in DJ sets but that I have put onto my mp3 player and personally enjoy.
Do you have a set method for making a mix or is it done on the fly?
Yeah, I’d make a playlist of at least two hours of tracks in a similar genre, then mix on the fly from them.
Please give us some musical background on yourself — how/when you first got into producing, etc.
I first got into producing in the early days of university life. Been playing instruments and been in bands since my early teens. Drums are my favorite!
How would you describe your musical output?
Very mixed. From very chilled and ambient to heavy and gritty.
What made you release your mixtape, The Prize, as a free download?
I got so frustrated with my label at the time and just wanted to give the people something! I had been writing for such a long time without anyone hearing any new material, it felt like a natural option to release it for free.
