Société Perrier DJ Mix: Stereothieves

Stereothieves pic

Initially choosing to remain anonymous in order to build a name for themselves based on music alone, Stereothieves later revealed themselves as Joey Funk and Damien ‘Accent N’ Rodriguez, joint winners of a DJ battle who began collaborating soon after.

Based in El Paso, Texas, the duo have been consistently ripping up dance floors ever since their incarnation in 2010, thanks to their upfront, low-slung take on bassline heavy electro-house.

Stereothieves here provide us with a full-on heavyweight of a DJ mix, blending together a range of current sounds and styles that have caught the duo’s attention.

Tell us about your mix.
The mix is primarily bass heavy and we like to try and go around to different areas of the electronic music spectrum. It includes some moombahton, trap, house, kuduro and pretty much what we like at the moment with a few of our newer tracks.

Do you have an idea of how you want a mix to sound before you start it?
We usually try to figure out the first two-three tracks to set a tone and then wing it from there. We basically maintain an energetic vibe throughout the party, between the crowd and ourselves.

What are some of your favorite tracks to play in a DJ set at the moment?
Damien: One of them has to be Ta-Ku’s “Hustle.” That track is wild.
Joey: I’m a big fan of “Underground Anthem” by Flosstradamus and “Impacto” by Sazon Booya right now

What’s the scene like in Texas for dance music and clubs?
The scene is excellent around the state. In our hometown it was a bit rare to see a good consistent flow of shows, most set in the ‘underground,’ but now there’s multiple shows every week and festivals attracting incredible crowds, growing from a modest beginning. The rest of Texas has more steady festivals and club nights that really build on the state’s presence for electronic music. It also helps that a few really talented producers live here, including Bro Safari, Run DMT, Crizzly, Vicious Viv and more.

What have you got planned for the coming months?
Right now we are going to be collaborating with L.A. moombahton producers 2Deep, we have an upcoming three-track trap release on Whiskey Pete’s Switchblade Records and some releases/remixes coming out soon with Kissy Sell Out’s San City High label.
