Take a Peak Inside Hong Kong's Exclusive Private Kee Club
Blame it on the odd seduction of the human psyche that we always want what we can’t have. In Hong Kong that insatiable want is the uber exclusive private Kee Club. Kee Club Hong Kong was conceived and founded by one of Hong Kong’s hautest couple. Hong Kong-based Maria and Christian Rhomberg were a marriage made in personal and professional heaven where east and west style, aesthetics and business savvy sensibilities seamlessly blended together.
The Kee Club’s dynamic duo brought their mix of backgrounds; from PR to bars and restaurants with a jet set style and sensibility and a natural penchant for introducing the right people at the right time. They took this knack and made an iconic club and global empire out of it. Together they changed the face of Hong Kong’s bar and restaurant industry as they laid down the foundation for the entertainment and lifestyle districts of both Lan Kwai Fong and Soho.
Opening in the heart of Hong Kong’s Central district, above the city’s most famous Chinese restaurant Yung Kee, Kee private members’ club quickly became known for its cosmopolitan clientele, refined dining and lavish parties. Spread over two floors, the Club’s ambiance is reminiscent of the exuberant European salons at the turn of the 20th century.
Kee recreates the atmosphere of a luxurious European residence using a contemporary and theatrical approach by combining classical Parisian style with African sculptures, Bauhaus design, 1940s furniture and artifacts carefully curated from the four corners of the world.
Located on the Sixth floor at Number 32 Wellington Street, Kee is a sanctuary where members, their international jet set guests and celebrities can gather to eat, meet, do business and party without paparazzi and overzealous guests that feel the need to document and photograph every person, plate and pour. Flashiness of any kind is seriously frowned upon. Kee is relaxed, chic and discreet.
As early promoters of the arts and sponsors of humanitarian and cultural issues, Kee often is a showcase of the finest art and design from around the world. It offers a diverse selection of world-class entertainment including avant-garde films, international DJs and top social, corporate and cultural events.
Kee is renowned for its outstanding cuisine with a Chinese Dim Sum menu presented with lunch and a more modern European cuisine served in the evening. Head Chef Daniel Salchegger brought a wealth of culinary experience, having worked previously at 6 Gault Millau establishments and 2-Michelin star restaurants in Europe.
As a place to see and be seen, Kee opens the dining room every evening and turns into a nightclub on weekends where it stages champagne and wine tastings, gourmet dinners and chic evenings filled with international DJs. Stars such as Peter Kruder, Gilles Peterson, Nathan Haines, David Morales, Hanna Haïs and Ralf Gum and countless others have all hit Kee’s deck.
Kee’s four salons in emerald green, purple, red and gold and its dining room are reminiscent of an opulent Venetian interior. The Purple Salon acts as a library with an eclectic selection of international newspapers and magazines and art, design and food books. The Red Salon transforms in to a boardroom or a party venue for private business meetings or dinners. It features state-of-the-art technology for persuasive presentations.
The Green Salon, also called the Centurion Salon is a private dining room and occasional game room and houses many treasured art pieces in the Kee collection. Because of its prestige, it is sponsored by American Express and is exclusively for its Centurion Card members.
The Gold Salon, which is the inner sanctum and owner Maria Rhomberg’s personal space furnished with family heirlooms and sometimes plays host to her vvip guests above and beyond the usual celeb set. It is reserved for her more regal and royal guests such as the Queen of Bhutan, Prince and Princess of Denmark, The Rolling Stones and other notables.
Bernard and Antoine Arnault, the power behind LVMH are ardent supporters of Kee. Christian Louboutin, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are but a few of the famous fashionable faces known to grace the place. We apparently missed clinking cocktail glasses with Bill, as in Clinton by all but a few days.
The club has played host to a plethora of lifestyle events — from gourmet dinners featuring the Michelin-starred chefs to Dom Pérignon’s showcase event- the seven sensualities dinner as well as a gala dinner for Christie’s chairman Viscount David Lindley and Christie’s private viewing of priceless Monets.
The Kee Club Hong Kong is an urban oasis where their international members and guests are encouraged to indulge in the finer things in life such as art, food, fashion, film, wine and each other. It’s where the arty, influential and entrepreneurial go to meet, mingle, make deals and get in to mischief.
If seeking membership, don’t call them, they’ll call you.
