The GIF turned 25 in 2012 and finally got some respect. GIFs were ubiquitous during the U.S. Presidential election and it was no surprise that Oxford American Dictionaries proclaimed GIF as the word of the year for 2012. Although some artists had been experimenting with its unique qualities for years, in 2012 many more became entranced by its charms. Here are my choices for the 20 best animated GIFs of 2012 (well, 19 really — the last one is mine, you can decide if it is worthy!). I look forward to seeing what the future brings for the newly famous Graphics Interchange Format.
