Upcoming Event: Alfredo Jaar - The way it is. An Aesthetics of Resistance @ Berlin Galleries

Museum_Berlin_Alfredo_Jaar_A_New_World_1990

Alfredo Jaar’s work creates art out of sensitive political and social issues but represents them in unexpected, thought-provoking forms that demand reflection and consideration.

Jaar’s work is not easily understood, and can often raise more questions than answer them, urging the audience to read and think about the context of the work, and the background of the real and concrete situations behind them.

The NGBK (New Society for Visual Arts) is presenting the exhibition by the Chilean artist named, Alfredo Jaar – The way it is. An Aesthetics of Resistance, simultaneously at three Berlin institutions, starting June 15.

The monographic pieces offer a retrospective survey of works spanning close to four decades. The artist, both a trained architect and filmmaker works with both urban spaces as well the spaces within the museum “dissecting surfaces and structures – producing statements related to spatiality and society.”

The exhibitions will be held at NGBK, Berlinische Galerie and Alte Nationalgalerie, and are based on two projects Jaar produced in Berlin in the early '90s which reference his interest in contemporary history and the possibilities and limitations of image and text systems.

Alfredo Jaar is best known for finding new ways to represent his politically motivated work and driving intellectual involvement with his audiences, and this upcoming exhibition certainly exemplifies his objective.

It seems this unique artistic talent runs in the Jaar family, with son Nicolas Jaar being the owner and founder of successful electronic record label and art house, Clown & Sunset.
