10 Things We Learned in Bangkok

By Annabelle Azadé Kajbaf

Thailand’s capital Bangkok is a booming metropolis with huge clubs, a lively cocktail scene and vast art galleries. The sprawling city  also has an underground edge with bars, vintage clothes shops, events collectives and boat parties. Here are some exclusive addresses to shop, party and relax when you visit.

1. Bed Supperclub
Bed Supperclub allows partiers to get very comfortable on individual beds, while sipping cocktails and occasionally hitting up the dance floor. Every 20 minutes, a performance grabs the crowd’s attention — from celebrity free-runners Parkour Generation climbing on walls to costumed contemporary dancers enchanting guests. Divided into two areas, the lounge part is all white, while the pitch dark club space caters to a dance-hungry crowd ready to roar.

2. Kolours Sunday
Vina Charay and friends decided to change the usual weekend plans of having brunch and instead created Kolours Sunday, a pool party that has became one of the most exciting after-parties in town. The event was a friends-only affair at first, but soon became so popular that Kolours is making its first anniversary as a festival with 25 artists and DJs. Sunday morning looks like a lot more of fun now.

3. Trasher Bangkok
Cheap is the ultimate chic with Trasher Bangkok. It all started when founder Ark Saroj’s created homemade remakes of Lady Gaga video clips which eventually went viral, so much so that the Mother Monster herself congratulated Ark while on her Born this Way Tour. This idea developed into a Factory-like collective with actors, musicians, and event managers. These days Trasher Bangkok is renowned for putting on wild theme parties in Bangkok, always with a sharp sense of humor.

4. V64 Gallery
Hidden in greater Bangkok, V64 is a secluded 4,800 square meter former warehouse turned  art establishment. The venue hosts more than 70 artist workshops, who exhibit and perform during musical evenings in the gallery space. Throughout the day, visitors are welcome to meet painters and sculptors who work in each of the 37 studios.

5. Sonic
Sonic opened last year on Thong Lo Road. The space looks like a mixture of Point Ephemere in Paris and Brooklyn Bowl in New York and can be described as a laid-back indie-rock place where new artists light the musical fire of young Thais and expats. The spot attracts fresh bands, from Thai to American bands, like last week’s show featuring The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

6. Bangkok Boat Parties
Chaophraya River is a beautiful stage and the perfect place to escape from the city are the Bangkok Boat Parties. Some of Thailand’s finest DJs spin on this two floor boat. Get ready for a musical journey, where clubbers will dance to everything from hip-hop to drum ‘n’ bass.

7. Issaya
Famed Chef Ian Kittichai settled into this renovated French colonial house in the Sathorn former French neighborhood a few months ago. Large armchairs and vintage decoration transport visitors back to the quiet city that Bangkok was in the 19th century. Guests are treated to “Thai cuisine of traditional ingredients and flavors with international and progressive cooking methods,” as well as an outstanding cocktail menu.

Located in the trendy area of Thong Lo road, models and local jetsetters pick their best vintage pieces in this brightly designed store. Imported mostly from Japan, all of the clothes are from the ’70s and are in perfect shape. From glittery cropped tops to amazing gowns, the place is a shopaholics must-see.

9. Shanti Hypnosis
Street massages can be cheap in both ways — your wallet might be in good shape after it, but your back will still hurt. Shanti Hypnosis is the best well-being trip you’ll ever discover — by healing your inner self. A great place for any city-dweller looking beyond the regular therapy methods.

10. Liaigre
Antiques at Chakutchak will charm mainstream tourists, but real home-deco lovers know where to pick the best pieces from the country. Spending half the year in Paris, half the year in Bangkok and traveling worldwide, her advice will fill any house with harmony, softness and exceptional taste.
