Après–ski in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

By Courtney Lochner

Germany’s tallest mountain, the Zugspitze is calling you and you’d better answer. This snowy beast will challenge your, toss you about and cause you to smile from ear to ear. It will also wipe you out and give your muscles a workout of their lives the same way it did for Olympians all the way back in 1936 when skiers flew down in search of Gold. The town that can best claim this mountain is a Bavarian fairy-tale type of place, perhaps where Hansel and Gretel live, Garmish-Partenkirchen. Go on say it. It’s fun.

With its charming streets, steins of beer and adorable locals, this place can easily entertain you for weeks whether on the slopes or in the spa. But what we love most about it is it’s dark side. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the few places that offers night skiing and even night tobaggan runs! If you want something a little less adventurous you can also opt for the slower but more romantic, torchlit tours through the Partnach Gorge.

After a full day and night of skiing, you’ll need to hit the town to enjoy the charm of this place to its fullest. Don’t worry, thanks to the fresher than fresh air here (known as climatotheraputic), you’ll have the energy to keep going, here’s where.

Enoteca Michel’s Weinbar located in the elegant Partenkirchner Hof Hotel is a swanky way to begin your après-ski evening. A long wine list and a whole lotta top shelf liquors will warm you up in no time. Equally as elegant if you’re thinking about visiting hotel bars is the Post Hotel’s Atlas Bar.

John’s Club is the place for mixology in Garmisch-Partenkirchen with 60 house special cocktails. You may have a hard time leaving this place as you’ll want to try them all but keep moving you’ve got places to go.

Peaches touts its “seven locations in one” which includes a casino, pizzeria and biergarten but most importantly a cocktail bar and dancefloor. With a full calendar of special events to keep the skiers happy you’ll be easily amused by live music or even half naked servers. The cocktails here will make you feel like you’ve ditched the mountain for an island getaway.

Local Cure is as it implies and so you’d be amiss to skip this joint. Here you’ll find a healthy mix of locals and tourists if you need a break from Peaches, try a hot spiced beer. If you’re still in the mood for liquors they’ve got it all here.

Bar 2.0 has a mixed crowd perfect for making new friends. This place is where you’d most likely to run into both a famous DJ or actor and someone wearing lederhosen, how can you not love it?

Spielbanken is a casino but one that takes pride in its gastronomic and bar offerings. Great people watching and fab spot to down a martini shaken not stirred.

To recover from this full itinerary and another day on the slopes, your next day’s après–ski ski should be spent at the spa – don’t leave Garmisch-Partenkirchen without indulging in the spas of Riessersee Hotel Resort and Spa your body and mind will danke schoen you.
