Toronto Boutique Jacflash Embodies The Diversity of West Queen West

Both a brick and mortar shop and a sleek online shopping destination, Jacflash is all about staying relevant.

Jacflash, Toronto’s own West Queen West boutique, is a brick and mortar shop filled with influential brands from around the world (including UNIF and Wildfox from LA, One Teaspoon, Mink Pink and Style Stalker from Australia, Bing Bang jewelry from NYC, Scotch and Soda from Amsterdam, and Transit from Italy), as well as a sleek online shopping destination, complete with a blog and a strong presence on social media. “Never let them forget about you,” says owner Jaclyn Genovese, who’s behind the shop’s online and general success, though interestingly, fashion retail wasn’t the intrepid owner’s initial plan.

After studying classical music in university, Genovese expected to end up simply working at a boutique while pursuing music on the side. However, she says a love of business and creativity combined with her experiences in a fashion-forward family are what lead her to open jacflash instead. Her goal for the store was to “embody the diversity of West Queen West.” As a result, the shop carries everything from casual-wear such as jeans, sweaters and tees, to business and cocktail-party attire, for both men and women. It’s a little bit of everything, a grouping Genovese calls an “exclusive and unique mix of worldly fashion trends,” to suit a variety of tastes and personal styles.

So what makes Genovese pick the brands she carries? “I don’t have a favourite line,” she explains.

My rule with buying is that if I would wear it, I should buy it. With that being said, my style is more on the classic side, but I love showcasing one killer piece with a more subtle outfit, for example wearing a studded leather jacket with a black pencil skirt, pumps and a white blouse.

As for the shop’s winter offerings, Genovese says shoppers can expect to see many different on-trend pieces in stock, including practical, but eye-catching outerwear, a variety of hats, pieces in classic shades of grey (a colour Genovese calls “the new neutral”), as well as a variety of leather options and perennially chic patterns such as leopard. “One of my favorite trends this season is Winter White,” she says, but if you try it, she advises you to stick to weather-conscious pieces such as chucky knits, jeans and jackets. When seeking something more luxurious, she suggests trying out a tuxedo-inspired look. “Whether you wear a full suit, jeans with a white blouse, or a tuxedo jacket with a mini dress, a women’s tuxedo look is sultry and sophisticated.” And, she says, jacflash has it all.

Jacflash is located at 1036 Queen Street West.
