Interview: Dalston Beatbox Duo I’m Just Happy
Beatbox duo I’m Just Happy are Pikey Esquire and Leon Rhymes. They hail from Dalston and are currently touring the UK in support of their recent releases ‘Roots’ and ‘The Egg Hunt’, which is a multi-media project featuring a brilliant video where the boys track down all the Faberge eggs on display in London. We caught up with Pikey and Leon before they hit the road.
How did you guys get together?
We used to pick potatoes together. Then we were in a group called Queens English together - we started jamming just us two then and it just grew and grew.
What inspired the Egg Hunt video?
Walking around London and seeing all these wicked designee eggs we just made up loads of eggstremely silly egg puns and thought would be a cracking viral video to go round and shoot in front of them all. It was ridiculous but a lot of fun, pure yokes!
What trainers are you wearing right now?
Leon: Nike Air Force 1 Supreme in black/engine/laser pink, wrapped in premium leather with a splatter midsole, and I know you didn't ask, but no underwear. I’m a sneaker freak! Pikey's barefoot, which is dangerous.
Where can we catch you gigging in London?
We're on a UK tour with Too Many T's until end of July! After that we'll be everywhere from Hootananny to your Nan’s house!
What’s the best thing about living in London?
Gigs, girls and green!
Who is the best skateboarder, Leon or Pikey?
Pikey: Ha ha you need to see Leon on a skateboard – have you seen Bambi?
Leon: Pikey definitely wins, hands down! Or feet down, whichever.
