The Savoy Plays Host to Classic Cocktails in the Making
We’re always happy to head down to The Savoy for a cocktail, after all they have not one but two beautiful watering holes in the shape of the classic American Bar and smouldering Beaufort Bar. But this week we found ourselves at the smartly discrete Museum Bar (that’s right The Savoy even has a tiny bar in its beautiful museum) - better still we were there to taste creations from three cocktail kings and one prince.
The evening had something of the feeling of a performance by a supergroup as the three previous winners of Bacardi Legacy rocked up to recreate their competition-winning creations along with a current contender for the crown.
Proceedings were kicked off by the charming Ago Perrone from The Connaught, the first Bacardi Legacy winner from 2010 who mixed up his Mulata Daisy (Bacardi, Dark Cacao, lime juice, caster sugar, fennel seeds, Galliano L’Autentico), a subtly rich take on the Daiquiri.
Next came the cheeky Matthew Dakers, Chartreuse Brand Ambassador and last year’s winner, who made his Angels’ Draft (Bacardi, Yellow Chartreuse, lime juice, honey, egg white, grapefruit bitters, mint leaves), a rich and minty delight.
Fresh from his February triumph earlier this year came current champion Zdenek Kastanek, of Quo Vadis, with his La Hermosa (Bacardi, Curacao, Manzanilla, Orgeat, fresh lemon juice, Yellow Chartreuse), a long refreshing drink that almost made us think it was summer.
It wasn’t difficult to see why these three had all been winners. Not only were their drinks taking cocktails to another level of deliciousness but they all gave great patter as they took us through their inspiration and reminiscences of the Bacardi Legacy competition.
The night was rounded up by the debonair Mr Chris Moore, Head Bartender at The Savoy’s Beaufort Bar and organiser of the event. He’s currently in the running to claim first prize, along with two other master mixers, during a year long programme of promotion for his creation The Encantador (Bacardi, Aperol, Eau de Framboise, lemon, vanilla) a complex and dry delight.
The concoctions of Perrone, Dakers and Kastanekare can be found on the very best drinks menus all around the world. But right here, right now we suggest you track down Mr Moore’s drink.
