Underworld’s Karl Hyde Plans Solo Art Show

Karl Hyde

He’s better known on the techno scene than the art scene, but now Underworld’s Karl Hyde is taking a step into the art world as he launches a new exhibition of his recent paintings.

The exhibition, titled What’s Going On In Your Head When You’re Dancing, opens at London’s Bernard Jacobson Gallery in the West End on July 17.

Hyde follows in the footsteps of fellow musicians Pete Doherty, John Squire and Maxim from The Prodigy all of who have held solo art shows over the past 12 months.

This will be the first chance to see Hyde’s paintings in the UK - the former art school student has exhibited his work in museums and galleries internationally - and the show will include the work that was shown at his first ever one-man painting show at the La Foret Museum in Tokyo last year.

Speaking about the inspiration for his work, Hyde says: “When a translator was relating my answers to interviewers, I put a pencil and a piece of paper in my hands, and what started to come out was the same marks I saw in my head while I was dancing with the group onstage. So I thought, ‘Well, this is curious,’ and I just kept going on with it, really; developing it from there and working with pieces of all sizes.”

For a snapshot of Hyde’s work check out the video below, which also features some rather thumping techno.
