Race to Oldfield’s Liquor Room in Culver City
There was an old saying back in day: “Who do you think you are? Barney Oldfield?” Well, we all can’t be him as there was only one Oldfield, but these days, we can raise a glass to him at Oldfield’s Liquor Room, The 1933 group's newest bar in Culver City that opened a few weeks ago.
Life-long hero of owner/designer Bobby Green, this bar pays homage to the famous speed racer from the 1900’s who raced for Henry Ford and crisscrossed the U.S. in a series of timed runs and match races, where he earned a reputation as a showman.
Once the old location of Saint and Sinner, the space has been competently remodel and transform into a soda shop looking bar that Oldfield might have frequent back in his hey day. Seeing that the menu was uniquely crafted in tribute to him, manger Jared Mort and his talented crew of mixologist including Armando Conway (La Descarga), Robin Jackson (Club Mallard) and Aaron Stepka (A-Frame and Rivera) created an innovative cocktail menu with very interesting classic drinks.
The mixologists use only the best spirits, fresh juices, homemade syrups and bottle soda like Perrier, Virgil’s Organic Cola and Fever Tree ginger beer to crafted amazing drinks. For your cocktail fix, sip on the tasty Cactus Derby made of Del Maguey Vida Mezcal, Chartreuse, fresh lemon, egg white and strawberry or the Peerless (Miller’s Gin, apricot liqueur, apricot nectar, ginger beer) named for the company Oldfield use to race for. Both are excellent drinks and sure to satisfy any cravings.
For snaking, local chef and The Cheesemonger's Kitchen author Chester Hastings has created a small selection of simple European-style bar sandwiches such as the thick-cut Fra' Mani ham with black cherry jam and farm butter or Valhrona bittersweet chocolate with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt, great for acting as a breather between rounds of drinks. Cocktails cost between $10- $12, while the punch that serves eight is $90 a bowl. So settle of to the bar with friends or alone and raise your drink to Barney. We’re sure he would feel honored.
