La Casa Azul, La Vida Cotidiana de Frida Kahlo

El hecho de llamar a la casa que vio nacer, crecer, sufrir, pintar, convertirse en una de las artistas más reconocidas a nivel mundial y morir a Frida Kahlo, como “La Casa Azul”, más que hablar del evidente color en las paredes habla de un mundo paralelo, el mundo de Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón. No es una casa en color primario como cualquier otra y ni siquiera creo que su inigualable contenido sea lo valioso en ella, pareciera más bien una extensión de la misma Frida.
La historia de esta casa es más familiar de lo que parece. Wilhelm Kahlo el padre de Frida adquirió este terreno ubicado en Coyoacán en 1904, en lo que ahora es la calle de Londres número 247, colonia del Carmen, y construyó una casa al típico estilo de aquel entonces, donde las habitaciones rodean un patio central y la fachada luce al estilo francés.
The fact that the house that witnessed Frida Kahlo being born, growing, suffering, painting, becoming one of the most recognized artists in the world and dying too, is known as the "Casa Azul” (Blue House) I think more than speaking about the obvious color in the walls speaks of a parallel world, the world of Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderon. It is not a primary color house like any other and I don't even think its unique content is the value in it, rather it comes down to it being an extension of Frida herself.
The history of this house is more familiar than it seems. Wilhelm Kahlo, Frida's father, acquired this land located in Coyoacan in 1904, in what is now London Street number 247, Colonia del Carmen, and built a house in the typical style of those times where the rooms surround a central courtyard and including a French-style facade.
Las deudas que la familia adquirió en parte generadas por los gastos médicos que se tuvieron que hacer cuando Frida se accidentó resultaron en hipotecas para la casa, que años más tarde el muralista mexicano y esposo de Frida, Diego Rivera pagó, adquiriendo la Casa Azul, donde pasaría largos periodos él también, convirtiéndola en la enorme propiedad que hoy conocemos, llena de vida y de la escénica de una de nuestras pintoras favoritas.
Debts that the family acquired in part generated by medical expenses from Frida's accident resulted in mortgages for the house, that years later the Mexican muralist and husband of Frida, Diego Rivera paid, acquiring the Casa Azul, where he would spend long periods too, making it the large property that we see today, full of life and of the essence of one of our favorite painters.
Each room is haunted by the personality and style of these two great artists. With a known taste for the Mexican, the house is decorated with exquisite colorful pieces that every moment take us to some other corner of Mexico and even invite us to identify the ethnicity that could have created them.
La cocina es uno de los lugares que conquistan al instante, hay quienes dicen que es el corazón del hogar. Un largo fogón decorado con mosaicos era el encargado de cocinar los manjares en las cazuelas de barro, que a la vez funcionan como decoración, con los que los señores de la casa gustaban de deleitar a sus invitados, personalidades del mundo del arte y la política como Leon Trotsky, André Breton, Juan O’Gorman, José Clemente Orozco, Dr. Atl, Isamu Noguchi, entre otros tantos.
En el comedor los trasteros se engalanan de una maravillosa vajilla de barro con burdas figuras humanas pintadas a mano que tienen un gran encanto, cuadros de bodegones y máscaras. Observar cada detalle en cada habitación probablemente toma mas de una visita, pues en cada pared se encuentra algo hermoso esperando ser descubierto entre los muebles de madera, la colección de juguetes y los colores que abundan en la casa.
The kitchen is one of the places that conquers at once, and some people say the it is the heart of the home. A large fireplace decorated with mosaics was in charge of cooking the delicacies in clay pots, which in turn serve as decoration, an with which the lords of the house liked to delight their guests, personalities from the world of art and politics as Leon Trotsky, Andre Breton, Juan O'Gorman, José Clemente Orozco, Dr. Atl, Isamu Noguchi, among many others.
In the dining room the dish cabinets are decorated with wonderful clay crockery with naïve hand-painted human figures with great charm, still life paintings and masks. Observing every detail in every room will probably take more than one visit because in each wall there is a beautiful thing waiting to be discovered between the wooden furniture, the collection of toys and the colors that abound in the house.
Las piezas prehispánicas que coleccionaba Diego se hacen presentes incluso en el jardín, y a la vez combinan con el iluminado estudio construido por Juan O’Gorman con piedra volcánica, usualmente utilizada por los aztecas en la construcción de sus pirámides y piezas ceremoniales. Lleno de libros, pequeñas esculturas, un inmenso caballete y frascos de perfume que adquirían nuevas funciones a la hora de pintar, una linda vista al jardín para tomarse un minuto, respirar y concentrarse nuevamente, en resumen, un espacio de ensueño para dar rienda suelta a la creatividad.
El cuarto de Frida se llena de contrastes. Los objetos como los corsés, los frascos de medicina, las muletas, la silla de ruedas y la pequeña cama con el espejo arriba que le permitía durante su convalecencia, después del accidente en tranvía que la atormentaría toda la vida, retratarse a sí misma, nos recuerdan el sufrimiento que los largos meses en recuperación le causaron, sufrimiento del cual nunca se libraría. Aunque es verdad que tal vez sin ese espejo en la cama la historia podría haber sido distinta.
The pre-Hispanic pieces that Diego collected are present even in the garden and also combine with the illuminated studio constructed by Juan O'Gorman with volcanic stone, which usually served the Aztecs in the construction of their pyramids and ceremonial pieces. Filled with books, small sculptures, a huge easel and perfume bottles acquiring new functions at the time of painting, a beautiful view to the garden to take a minute, breathe and concentrate again. In a few words, a dream space to unleash the creativity.
Frida's room is full of contrasts. Objects such as the corsets, medicine bottles, crutches, the wheelchair and the mirror above the little bed, which allowed her during the convalescence, after the tram accident that would haunt her all her life, to portray herself, remind us of the suffering that the long months in recovery caused her, a suffering which never let her free. While it is true that perhaps without that mirror above the bed the history might have been different.
Los retratos de personajes como Stalin, Mao Tse Tung y Lenin relatan las ideologías políticas de la pintora y su colección de ropa: huipiles, rebozos, enaguas, blusas, joyas; de juguetes y miniaturas nos cuentan el amor a México que Frida tenía, el amor a su cultura, su humor, su creatividad, su mundo cotidiano rodeado de impecable estética hasta el final.
Frida y Diego habitaron la Casa Azul de 1929 a 1954, y la prepararon para heredarla a su México lindo y querido. Entre las piezas de este lugar se encuentran algunas de las obras más importantes de Frida como Viva la Vida y Frida y la Cesárea, entre objetos personales, cartas, dibujos y todo lo que en la privacidad del hogar de alguien se puede encontrar.
The portraits of people such as Stalin, Lenin and Mao Tse Tung relate the political ideologies of the painter and her collection of clothing: huipiles, shawls, skirts, blouses, jewelry, toys and miniatures tells us about the love that Frida had for Mexico, the love for her culture, her humor, her creativity, her everyday world surrounded by impeccable aesthetics to the end.
Frida and Diego lived in the Casa Azul from 1929 to 1954, and then they prepared it as a heritage to his beautiful and beloved Mexico.
