Detrás de Rosie Music, una marca donde la ilustración es el ingrediente principal con 4 años de vida, se encuentra la artista plástica Cynthia Yee. “Todo empezó porque mis amigos me empezaron a pedir ilustraciones . De alguna manera tenía mucho ver con retratar una escena del indie rock, una cultura pop muy contemporánea donde se trata de hacer las cosas tú mismo. Un día me di cuenta que ya tenía bastantes ilustraciones y comencé a venderlas a través de Etsy”.
Etsy es la comunidad por excelencia donde amantes y especialistas en el DIY (Do It Yourself) se dan cita para vender sus obras, algo así como un gran tianguis virtual donde se pueden encontrar piezas únicas hechas a mano. Desde artículos para decoración, piezas de cerámica, obras de arte y por supuesto ropa. Rosie Music encontró el lugar perfecto para dar a conocer y comercializar sus encantadoras ilustraciones que generalmente plasma en prendas sencillas como playeras, sudaderas y algunos accesorios.
Behind Rosie Music, a brand where illustration is the main ingredient with 4 years of life, is the plastic artist Cynthia Yee. "It all started when my friends began asking for illustrations. In some ways it had much to do with portraying a scene of indie rock, a very contemporary pop culture where it’s about doing things yourself. One day I realized I had enough illustrations and started selling them through Etsy. "
Etsy is the quintessential community where fans and specialists in DIY (Do It Yourself) gather to sell their works, something like a big virtual flea market where you can find unique handmade pieces, from decorative objects, ceramics, artwork and of course clothes. Rosie Music found the perfect place to publicize and market her charming illustrations which she usually prints in simple garments like T-shirts, sweatshirts and some accessories.
De alguna manera estás llevando tu arte a cosas funcionales
Exactamente, utilitarias, e incluso mucho mas pop. Creo que es más fácil que la gente se relacione en primera instancia con el tipo de imágenes que trabajo con Rosie Music. A la vez me gusta que las imágenes no se entiendan a la primera y por eso tengo otro proyecto. La vida y el día te da para hacer muchos niveles de exploración en tu trabajo. Creo que conformarte con un camino es muy poco, en especial si tienes ganas de más, aparte con herramientas como el internet y la gran cantidad de información que ahí hay, incluso se pueden vivir muchas vidas distintas.
¿Qué es lo que inspira las ilustraciones en Rosie Music?
Cada ilustración sí diría que está basada en personas que conozco, a veces no es tan literal, son pasajes de la vida, de alguna manera es como el retrato de una escena. De repente se mezclan canciones o se mezclan sensaciones agridulces o de melancolía. Define muchísimo mi alrededor, personas que quiero, que admiro y que siento que tienen algo que decir.
Somehow you are taking your art to functional things
Exactly, utilitarian, and even much more pop. I think it's easier for people to relate in first instance to the type of images I work with in Rosie Music. At the same time I like that the images may not be understand at first and so I have another project. Life and days give you many levels of exploration in your work. I think that conforming with one path is not enough, especially if you want more, besides with tools like the Internet and the vast amount of information around, you can even live many different lives.
What inspires the artwork for Rosie Music?
I would say that each illustration is based on people I know, sometimes not so literal, are passages of life, it somehow is like the picture of a scene. Suddenly, songs or bittersweet feelings or melancholy are mixed. My environment defines much, as well as people I love, people I admire and that I feel have something to say.
¿Qué materiales usas?
Muchísima acuarela, es mi medio favorito. Lo que esta padre también es que cuando edito las acuarelas pueden convertirse en obras totalmente diferentes una vez que las paso a la computadora, lo cual me permite plasmarlos de manera mas natural en otras cosas como bolsas, botes, totes o tela.
¿Cómo es tu dinámica? ¿Primero piensas en la ilustración y luego en qué te gustaría aplicarla?
Es muy curioso porque mucha gente trabaja muy ordenadamente: tiene una idea, la plasma y muchas veces desde el principio sabe en qué va a terminar. A mí me cuesta un poco de trabajo hacer eso. En mi caso probablemente haga una ilustración, se quede guardada y hasta como medio año después la utilice. De pronto digo “tengo ganas de hacer unas bolsas” y me acuerdo que tengo una ilustración. Regreso y las vuelvo a trabajar, es como ir sobre la marcha y me gusta porque creo que no se vuelve acartonado. Las cosas van acomodándose solitas.
What materials do you use?
Lots of watercolor, it is my favorite medium. The cool thing about it is that when I edit the watercolor works they can become something totally different once you step into the computer, which allows me to capture them in a more natural way in things like bags, bottles, totes or fabric.
What is your dynamic?, do you think about the illustration first and then where would you like to apply it?
It is very interesting because many people work very neatly: they have an idea, capture it and many times since the beginning they know how it will end. It’s not easy for me to do that. In my case probably I’ll do an illustration, save it and a year after use it. Suddenly I say "I want to make some bags" and I remember that I have an illustration and go back to work it. Is like going step by step and I like it because I think it doesn’t become stiff. Things settle by themselves.
¿Qué artistas, qué blogs se relacionan con Rosie Music?
Me encanta Pinterest, también hay una artista llamada Jenny Hart que hace bordados, tiene una compañía llamada Sublime Stitching que sigue toda la línea del hazlo tu mismo, son trabajos súper femeninos y súper poderosos. Ya tenemos una colaboración en puerta, le gustó una serie que trabajé tiempo atrás de unas chicas usando máscara de ave "To Shy", nos estuvimos escribiendo durante años y ya por fin se concretó esta colaboración. Está a punto de salir, les estaré informando.
También hay muchos ilustradores en México que me gustan, había un proyecto llamado Dear Deer de una tienda en Guadalajara, que fue semillero de muchas marcas que ahorita funcionan muy bien, yo los conocí por Paulina Magos una de las creadoras de esa tienda. Marcaron una escena muy padre de lo hecho a mano, las piezas únicas y las creaciones independientes.
¿Qué otras colaboraciones has tenido?
Con Fou Fou Chat, hicimos hace un par de años una serie de edición limitada. Fue buenísimo, yo nunca había hecho accesorios propiamente, ya llevábamos tiempo de conocernos y todo se dio muy naturalmente. También con Bárbara Betanzos quien tiene una marca llamada Santoki, hemos hecho cosas para la casa como almohadas para sillones y bolsas.

I love Pinterest, there is also an artist named Jenny Hart that makes embroidery, has a company called Sublime Stitching that follows the line of do it yourself, her works are super feminine and powerful. We have a partnership nearby, she liked a series of some girls using bird masks, "To Shy ", that I made some time before, we were writing each other for many years and finally this collaboration took shape. It’s about to come out, I will be reporting.
There are also many illustrators in Mexico that I like, there was a project called Dear Deer in a store in Guadalajara, which was a hotbed of many brands that work very well right now, I met it by Paulina Magos one of the creators of that store. It started a very cool scene of handmade, unique pieces and independent creation.
What other contributions have you had?
With Fou Fou Chat, we made a couple of years ago a series of limited edition. It was great, I had never done accessories, and we had time to get to know us and everything came very naturally. With Barbara Betanzos who has a brand called Santoki, we have done things for the home such as pillows for chairs and bags.
Ahorita tus prendas son muy básicas ¿en algún momento te gustaría hacer prendas que fueran más complicadas?
Sí, definitivamente. También utilizar telas más arriesgadas. Los básicos son increíbles porque le quedan a toda la gente, no clavarse tanto en las tallas es uno de mis intereses. La moda es un mundo increíble y aunque por el momento estoy más metida en hacer prendas listas para usarse, no descarto la posibilidad de hacer una colección completa.
Es lo divertido de estos tiempos, si te aplicas en el DIY puedes hacer de todo, desde papel tapiz hasta platos
De hecho justo ahora que lo mencionas acabo de terminar un diseño para una marca mexicana que se dedica a hacer papel tapiz. Y es muy interesante porque también es una manera de convivir con el arte, no necesariamente enmarcado sino de una manera mas casual, decorando los espacios donde la gente vive.
Ahora es una época increíble para hacer cualquier cosa, y por lo mismo debe ser abordada con muchísimo respeto. Tenemos acceso a tanta información y a saber cómo hacer tantas cosas que resulta muy sencillo aventarse a hacerlas. Cuando digo que sí me lanzaría a hacer una colección me refiero a esto, pero cada proyecto hay que estudiarlo, informarse muchísimo al respecto y hacerlo con cautela.
Right now your clothes are very basic, wold you ever would to make clothes that were more complicated?
Yes, definitely. Also to use risky fabrics. The basics are incredible because they are for all people, not worrying to much about sizes is one of my interests. Fashion is an incredible world and although at the moment I'm more stuck on ready-made garments I wouldn’t say no to the possibility of making a complete collection.

In fact right now that you mention it, I just finished a design for a Mexican brand that is dedicated to make wallpaper. And it is very interesting because it is also a way of living with art, but not necessarily framed, in a more casual way, decorating the spaces where people live.
Now is an incredible time to do anything, and therefore it must be approached with great respect. We have access to lots of information and to know how to do so many things that it's easy to just go and make them. When I say yes I would to take the chance of making a collection I mean this, but for each project you must study, learn a lot about it and do it with caution.
