Suhab: Pequeños Pasos Para Grandes Cambios

Siempre he dicho que es padre hablar de los proyectos de los amigos, especialmente porque conocemos a las personas, sus inquietudes y muchas veces aquellos sueños o metas que quieren alcanzar, así como porque llegar a ellas no siempre es sencillo y requiere ser lo suficientemente valiente para emprender el camino.
De acuerdo al estilo de vida y algunos ideales relacionados con el diseño sustentable, un grupo de diseñadores se unen para crear Suhab, un despacho de diseño que a la vez produce sus propios artículos teniendo en mente el diseño, la funcionalidad y un bajo impacto para el medio ambiente.
I've always said it is cool to talk about your friend's projects, especially because we know people, their concerns and sometimes those dreams or goals they want to achieve. But also because reaching them is not always easy and requires to be brave enough to hit the trail.
According to the lifestyle and some ideals related to sustainable design, a group of designers came together to create Suhab, a design firm that also produces its own items having in mind the design, functionality and low impact to the environment.
Yo conocí a un par de elementos de este equipo mientras estudiaban Diseño Gráfico y el pretexto de este post ha sido perfecto para reencontrarnos. Suhab lleva ya un tiempo operando desde la colonia Roma y todos ellos son un gran ejemplo para aquellos que desean lanzarse con sus propios proyectos, especialmente para los que proponen algo nuevo y tan propositivo como es Suhab en un país como México donde el diseño sustentable aun es un tema nuevo.
“Siempre son unas cosas por otras. Más bien ahorita nosotros nos estamos enfocando en nuestros propios productos como las bolsas y las libretas que hacemos aquí mismo, o el portacolillas que es un producto totalmente Suhab. Todo es hecho en México”, me cuenta parte del equipo mientras estamos sentados en la sala de sus instalaciones, ubicadas en la calle de Mérida 30, la cual cuenta con una pared de distintos pájaros -el representante oficial de Suhab que se encuentra en el logo y en todos sus artículos- intervenidos por amigos y artistas.
I knew a couple of elements of this team while studying Graphic Design and the pretext of this post was perfect to get reacquainted. Suhab have being some time now operating from the Roma neighborhood and they are a great example for those wishing to launch their own projects, especially for those proposing something new and as purposeful as Suhab in a country like Mexico where the sustainable design is still a new topic.
"It's always one thing for another. Right now we are focusing on our own products such as bags and notebooks we do here, or the disposal for cigarette buts, that is a totally Suhab product. Everything is done in Mexico", part of the team tells me as we sit in the living of their place, located at Merida 30, which has a wall of different birds -the official representative of Suhab found in the logo and all its articles- intervened by friends and artists.
Como bien lo mencioné anteriormente, otro de los puntos importantes en la dinámica de Suhab es el uso de materiales y mano de obra cien por ciento mexicana, de manera que invitan a un consumo responsable en todos los aspectos incluido el apoyo a la economía local, e incluso cuentan con proyectos donde integran a comunidades indígenas.
Bolsas, playeras, libretas en distintos formatos, el compostero, el portacolillas, papel semilla, objetos de cerámica que funcionan como macetas, mobiliario y objetos para decoración que dan un look fresco, esta empresa se compone principalmente de diseñadores industriales y diseñadores gráficos. Además han trabajado también para otras grandes empresas como Coca Cola diseñando catálogos y para Office Depot con agendas, entre otras reconocidas marcas. “Las pastas en el libro de Coca Cola fueron hechas con el cartón de las cajas que usan para transportar sus refrescos”.
As I mentioned before one of the important points in the dynamics of Suhab is the use of a hundred percent Mexican materials and manufacture, in a way that invites us to be responsible consumers in all aspects including the support to the local economy. They even have projects where they integrate indigenous communities.
Bags, shirts, notebooks in different formats, the compost box, the cigarette buts holder, seed paper, ceramics that functions as flowerpots, furniture and decorative objects that give a fresh look, this company is mainly composed of industrial designers and graphic designers. They have also worked for other big companies like Coca Cola designing catalogs and for Office Depot making agendas, among other recognized brands. "The covers in the book of Coca Cola were made with cardboard boxes that they used to carry their soda."
En su cocina tienen la basura separada y cuentan con un pequeño jardín al fondo con un montón de plantas que cuelgan. La sensación de entrar al despacho/tienda es la de entrar en el departamento de unos chicos genuinamente conectados con la tierra y además creativos. Es muy divertido visitar la tienda por la gran cantidad de chucherias encantadoras y amigables con el planeta que en cada rincón se encuentran.
En el pasillo por el cual se entra están estacionadas las bicicletas con las que los miembros de Suhab se desplazan y la pared se adorna con la filosofía que utilizan: Pequeños pasos para grandes cambios. Si no salen con una nueva planta tal vez salgan con una nueva mesa, lo importante es que conozcan las opciones en productos sustentables y mexicanos, los servicios y a estos diseñadores que son la pura buena onda.
In their kitchen the garbage is separated and they have a small garden at the back with lots of hanging plants. The feeling of stepping into the office/store is to enter the flat of some creative guys genuinely connected with the earth. It's fun to visit the store for the large amount of charming and planet friendly stuff that is located in every corner.
In the corridor where you enter there are parked bicycles which Suhab members use to move and a wall is adorned with the philosophy they use: Small steps to big changes. If you do not come out with a new plant you may come away with a new table, the important thing is to know the options on sustainable and Mexican products, the services and these designers that are so cool.
