Art Walk to Serve Food and Feminism With a Side of Porn
How Wynwood's Second Saturday Art Walk manages to impress attendees every month is a bit of a mystery, but we're happy that it's still living up to the hype. This weekend is no exception, with three programs in particular already commanding our attention.
First, this Saturday marks the inaugural Art Walk Bacchanalia, an outdoor fête of food, wine and cocktails where art lovers don't necessarily have to be on their best behavior. Organizers are already banking on it's success, with the event —- which will benefit the Miami Children's Hospital Foundation — slated to return in September.
Also on our must-see list is "Female Hu$tle," a collaboration between University of Florida MFA Students Heather Miller and Rosemarie Romero. Occupying the Locust Projects space, the exhibit consists of two parts: Romero's Porn Nails, a nail salon in the gallery where manicures will be exchanged for chats about sex, love and work as it pertains to life in South Florida, and Miller's Gold/Mirror, a group of life-sized, sculptural-photogrphic works depicting female bodies painted in gold, their faces replaced with mirrors. Keep your eye out for Romero, who will be working in character as Chici, a Latin manicurist on roller skates donning a platinum wig.
There's a considerable buzz surrounding Lissette Schaeffler's By the Hour, too. For the series, the Miami-based photographer captured daytime shots of empty motel rooms that are rented in sixty-minute increments. Despite the arguably seedy subject, Schaeffler's photos still manage to stun.
Second Saturday Art Walk is August 11, 2012 from 6-11pm
