Donna Karan Presents Haitian Muse in Miami
Perhaps it was fate. At the very least it was a slim chance that Donna Karan discovered the artistic work of Haitian Philippe Dodard. Visiting the island post-earthquake for charitable work, Karan saw his work in her hotel and couldn't let the imagery of his ironwork genius go. Of course, when you're Donna Karan, you tend to be a bit busy, so a few failed attempts to meet the artist later due to schedule conflicts, and she finally met him in his own home in Haiti where she was able to take in more of his works. Et voilà! A connection was made, a star was born. Dodard won the pass to the world that every artist dreams of. Karan was taken with his work and decided the rest of the world should see it too.
Alas today we too get to enjoy and discover what Donna Karan saw in Haiti that day. A shared exhibit of Karan's fashions and Dodard's ironwork artistry is now on exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. In the exhibit Karan showcases complementary designs to the black and white landscapes of Dodard's iron-inspired works, the result being a collection so cool the only question that remains is, where do we buy it?
