Dzine's Imperial Nails to Offer the Ultimate Manicure
Chicago-based contemporary mixed-media artist Dzine is defining the meaning of the term "nail art." The trend that's taking the world by storm is now the subject of his new book, Nailed, to be published by the Standard Hotel's hip and arty imprint Standard Press. The upcoming book details the evolution of nail art and decoration in different cultures around the world. The story is told through pics from nail salons across the U.S. and, of course, Dzine's own imaginative and highly elaborate creations. The book's intro is by Paper magazine co-founder Kim Hastreiter and features contributions from heavy hitters including Luis Gispert, Yonehara Yasuma, Mickalene Thomas, Jamel Shabaz and Fab 5 Freddy. A look through a few of the pieces show a mix of ornate traditional Asian hand ornaments with symbols of urban pop culture (like vintage Coupe de Ville car nameplates and blinged-out dollar signs).
Dzine and the Standard are taking the book promotion to the next level with an interactive exhibition, which displays artwork from Dzine's collection along with an actual pop-up nail art salon — inspired by DZine's mom's home nail salon circa 1970 — dubbed Dzine's Imperial Nails. Dzine and his nail artists will be setting up shop during Art Basel at the Standard Spa — with Perrier as a sponsor. From November 30 to December 5, manis will be appointment-only, but Dzine's Imperial Nails will be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from December 10 to December 18. Drop by to soak in some culture and set yourself up with a totally whacked-out manicure.
The Standard Shops will also be the exclusive spot to pick up the Nailed book from December 1 through March, when the book is released worldwide.
