Better Know A Model: Jérôme Alarie
J’adore le voyage et les rencontres alors je me suis dit why not!
Aperçu sur la passerelle pour Dinh Bà et Dom Rebel, Jérôme Alarie a notamment défilé pour Jean Paul Gaultier. Cet hiver, il surfe sur l’océan Pacifique; c’est ainsi qu’il garde la forme entre deux castings et le gym en Australie.
First noticed walking the catwalk for Dinh Bà and Dom Rebel, Jérôme Alarie has most notably worked the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier. This winter, he’s surfing along Australia’s Pacific coast, his secret to maintaining a lean, mean physique – along with hitting the gym, of course – between casting calls.
La porte du mannequinat s’est ouverte pour Jérôme en sortant de l’université. «J’avais pas envie de commencer tout de suite la vie d’adulte, le travail et tout», explique-t-il. Passionné de voyage, Jérôme a envie d’aventure. Il se souvient d’un conseil étonnant d’une amie quelques années auparavant; tenter sa chance dans le mannequinat. « C’était pas un rêve que j’avais depuis que j'étais petit, lance Jérôme, mais j’adore le voyage et les rencontres alors je me suis dit why not! » Il a donc frappé à la porte de l’agence Specs, qui l’épaule depuis : « dès le début ils ont été sympathiques, professionnels et en plus ils ont une bonne réputation! J’ai pas senti le besoin d’aller voir ailleurs quand ils m’ont dit oui. »
The modeling world first caught Jérôme’s eye upon graduating university. “I wasn’t ready to take the plunge into adult life, with work and all,” explains the model. An avid traveler, Jérôme was on the prowl for a massive adventure. He remembers the advice of a friend, which had caught him off guard a few years back: to just take a stab at a modeling career. “It wasn’t a dream I had been cultivating my whole life, but I had always loved to travel and meet new people, so I thought, why not?” says Jérôme. So he knocked on the door of Specs Model Management, which has been repping him ever since. “From the get-go, they were friendly, professional and have a great reputation. I didn’t feel the need to look elsewhere once they agreed.”
Comment ça se passe en Australie?
Beaucoup de bonnes réactions, demain je fais un shoot sur la plage à 5h du matin et j’ai des castings pas mal toute la journée! C’est pas un métier très stable et les vacances de Noël sont très importantes ici; plus personne travaille alors le beat recommence tranquillement fin janvier. Sinon ça se passe bien, je suis en option pour différents éditos et quelques lookbooks! Le voyage est super enrichissant, je découvre une autre culture, je dois m’adapter à un nouvel environnement et c’est pas toujours simple… mais être sur la plage de Bondi, devant une des plus belles vues au monde, ça a quelque chose de magique.
How are things in Australia?
I’ve been getting lots of good feedback, and tomorrow I’m doing a shoot on the beach at 5 a.m., which will be followed by casting calls pretty much for the rest of the day! It’s not a very stable job and the Christmas vacations are very important here, so no one works. Things get rolling again in late January. Otherwise, I’m doing pretty well. I’m in the running for many editorials and a few lookbooks! The trip is a really enlightening one; I’m discovering another culture. I have to adapt to a new environment and it’s not always simple. But being on Bondi Beach, facing one of the world’s most awe-inspiring views… There’s a certain magic to it, no doubt.
Ta meilleure expérience en tant que mannequin?
C’est dur d’en choisir juste une… D’abord, il y a les moments de complicité incroyables avec les gens du milieu, c’est spécial de devoir s’adapter à de nouvelles équipes, toutes les rencontres… Je crois que ma meilleure expérience, c’est le moment juste après les rushs des défilés, quand tout le monde se félicite : un fashion show, c’est beaucoup de travail et de stress aussi pour les personnes impliquées. C’est tout un soulagement quand le défilé est réussi, quand tout s’est bien passé malgré les imprévus!
Your best experience as a model?
It’s really difficult to choose only one… First, there are the moments of incredible synergy with all the industry folks, when we’re on the same page. It’s quite special to have to adapt to new teams, and to constantly meet new people… I believe that my best experience is the moment right after the rush of fashion shows, when everyone congratulates each other. A fashion show is a tremendous amount of work and stress for everyone involved. It’s a great relief when everything goes down smashingly, when everything has gone well regardless of all those intangibles and unexpected twists and turns!
Tes projets futurs?
Je retourne à Montréal au printemps et je laisse la porte ouverte pour l’Europe, on verra!

I’ll be back in Montreal come spring and I leave the door open for European possibilities. We’ll see!
