Art In General Goes Global This Winter

artingeneral

Works from far-flung corners of the earth will come together in New York City this winter under the roof of Art In General. This year's winter exhibitions — running from January 28 to March 17 — feature the visions of artists from Beirut, Reykjavik, and Denmark. Lebanon's Mounira Al Solh takes the inspiration for Dinosaurs from a quintessentially American source — the films of John Cassavetes. Mixing movie homage, drinking game, and exploration of human interaction, Al Solh directs a group of participants in reenacting scenes from several different Cassavetes films, all revolving around the consumption of alcohol.

Icelandic artist Katrin Sigurdardóttir gets meta with her piece Stage, where we witness a work inside a work and realize that the framing helps to define what it contains. Stage involves the construction of a miniature theater in which light and shadow dance around each other to create a kind of complex shadowplay that cunningly tweaks our perceptions. Finally, Theresa Himmer — a Danish artist currently based in NYC — offers up All State, which employs the Art In General elevator as source material, amplifying the sounds of the elevator's mechanical movements, modifying them and mixing them with other sources to create a carefully crafted state of confusion. While you'll have several weeks to experience all the aforementioned works, the kickoff on January 28 will also include a reception at Art In General with the artists themselves, from 6 to 8pm, so you can peek behind the curtain at the people behind it all.
