Kaelen Shows Art-Deco Inspired Collection At NYFW

Kaelen

I always start with one point of reference and then it snowballs into something that sounds a little crazy but makes sense to me.

Toronto native and Société Perrier luminary Kaelen Haworth has been making waves in the fashion scene since her namesake label Kaelen launched in 2010. Today she presented her Fall/Winter 2012 collection at The Box at Lincoln Center, showcasing a comprehensive line ranging from tough wool bomber jackets to racy lace tunics. We spoke to the Parsons graduate about working on the collection and how she gears up for fashion week.

What is the inspiration for the Fall 2012 collection?
The inspiration for this collection was a mix of '20s references: Art Deco, Clara Bow meets Clemence Poesy, a little bit of androgyny. It is graphic and sophisticated. I always start with one point of reference and then it snowballs into something that sounds a little crazy but makes sense to me.

How do you prepare for fashion week?
I try to get a lot of sleep and hang out with my least-cynical friends. Lots of coffee, and lately I've been going to the juice press to make sure I'm eating healthy stuff so I don't burn out. Coffee and Clementines are always helpful.

What materials and textiles did you use?
I like materials that have a lot of texture to them, it adds so much depth. This season, I'm using some really interesting Laser cut leathers, shearling, wools, and washed silks.

What silhouette(s) define the collection?
This season the dress silhouettes are very fluid and drapey with cutouts details or color blocking. The jackets are sharper and more graphic, they are a counterpoint to the soft dresses and silk harem pants.

How have you seen you label grow? Is there a pattern or motif you see yourself using that is built upon previous experiences/collections?
Yes, it has been growing over the past few seasons and I'm thrilled with how it's progressing. Usually I create my prints each season with a friend of mine who does graphic design, Sarah Dobson. This season I have two prints from her, and then two prints that my stylist, Eva Zuckerman, painted. That is something i see continuing. I think it's nice to create prints so that there is a personal connection, and people really respond to them.
