Société Perrier DJ Mix: Free Magic and Faso from Discovery
These days most people consume music digitally, but for a growing contingent of music enthusiasts believe MP3s don't hold a candle to the fidelity of a vinyl record. Discovery, the NYC-based deep-house party crew/recently-launched record label, subscribe to the same analog ethos — even if it makes the process of making and spinning music a little trickier. "This year has been exciting and a bit of a learning process so far," says Discovery's Joel Fowler (a.k.a. Free Magic). "We recently started a label for Discovery and released our first EP tracks from with Free Magic and Jkriv. We decided to release it vinyl-only and get involved as much as we could with the entire process. It was great to make the tracks, go sit in on the mastering and cutting of lacquers, go to the plant when they got the plates and learn the whole process."
While riding the proverbial learning curve in their new endeavor, Discovery continues to throw some of the city's best underground parties. "We celebrated our two-year anniversary with DJ Harvey and Kyle Hall which ended up being a really cool pairing and making both floors of the club really unique — we book very organically, basically just picking people whose records we play," describes Fowler.
With an upcoming gig supporting Art Department in March, on February 11 the crew's party at Andrew W.K.'s Santos Party House is hosted by Detroit techno icon Chez Damier. Says Fowler, "I still can't believe we get to host Chez Damier this weekend! Him and Kai [Alce] have been huge influences of ours. Our plan is to warm up the room then turn it over to them from midnight on — find us in the middle of the dance floor smiling."
In honor of the party we present an exclusive mix from Free Magic and Faso featuring gems from Move D, Deetron and Moodymann — crafted exclusively on vinyl, of course. "We just picked records we don't always get a chance to play out and recorded it. We hope everyone enjoys it."
