Upcoming Event: 2012 Mermaid Parade @ Coney Island
This Saturday, New Yorkers will ring in the beginning of summer with the 29th annual Mermaid Parade in Coney Island. Aquatic creatures from all over the five boroughs will be showing their fins at this decadent display of body art and semi-nude costumes.
An homage to the Mardi Gras parties thrown there in the first half of the 20th century, Surf Avenue will be overflowing with sizzling sights and sounds of those paying tribute to Coney Island's beauty and history, complete with hand-crafted floats, vintage cars, marching bands and of course, an entourage of bedazzled mermaids and mermen. When you see King Neptune and Queen Mermaid at the parade's end, be sure to head over to the Mermaid Parade Ball at the nearby New York Aquarium for some drinks and enchantment under the sea partying.
