Head to Lorimer Street/Metropolitan Ave. station for a treasure trove of mags, vinyl and cassettes.

The next time you're waiting for the G train (which let's face it, will probably be the next time you take the G train), check out The Newsstand, an underground (literally and figuratively) store filled with 'zines, independent publications, vinyl and snacks, set up in an abandoned subway newsstand in the Lorimer Street/Metropolitan Avenue station. The brainchild of creative agency ALLDAYEVERYDAY, they partnered with 8-Ball Zine Fair to curate a diverse group of publications spanning genres like photography, graffiti and illustration. "The Newsstand offers a bit of something for everyone," says Jamie Falkowski, marketing director of ALLDAYEVERYDAY." From more polished and mass produced magazines like The Gourmand, Tissue, 032c to self-produced and often handmade titles."

The carefully curated publications were assembled by Lele Saveri of the The 8-Ball Zine fair, a connoisseur of all things 'zine, whose relationships with publishers, stores and independent artists helped secure this one-of-a-kind destination. The Newsstand is slated to sell its offerings through July, but may be open longer depending on the store's popularity. As if cool mags, vintage records, edibles like beef jerky and chips, weren't enough, in the coming weeks The Newsstand will also be releasing some original cassette mixtapes which were made and curated by Co-op 87 specially for the store.

For New Yorkers perpetually in a hurry, The Newsstand offers a literary and musical getaway, says Falkowski. "Being able to disconnect from hundreds of prompts through email, social, the web, text, and instead focusing on a single subject matter, photographer or idea is an escape that feels more important now than ever." We couldn't agree more, so the next time you head underground for that dreary commute, let The Newsstand take you on ride through the wonderful world of 'zines.

Italian art bad boy Maurizio Cattelan designs quirky sweatshirts with MSGM.

Known as a sculptor, publisher, trickster and an art world bad boy, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan adds a new title to his long, unexpected and varied career: fashion designer. Creating a line of brightly colored and irreverently patterned unisex summer sweatshirts for Milan fashion label MSGM, Cattelan collaborated with MSGM founder Massimo Giorgetti, combing through the visual archives of Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari's Toilet Paper Magazine for the sweatshirts' prints. From hands filled with lipstick to deer to a hilariously literal and slightly grotesque "I love you," the prints reflect Cattelan's high energy, quirky and subversive humor, as well as the easily identifiable aesthetic of Toilet Paper Magazine.

While the sweatshirts will be available at colette.fr, lanecrawford.com, thecorner.com, luisaviaroma.com and ssense.com at the end of June, there is no word whether Cattelan's new foray into fashion design will be his new career path after notoriously retiring from art during his 2011 retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum.

Rising electro-dubstep star MitiS shares his SoundCloud top 5.

Philadelphia's Joe Torre is MitiS, a classically trained pianist who two years ago decided to merge his technical prowess with his unbridled love of beats and bass. Since then he's taken the EDM scene by storm, winning a faithful flock of followers who can't get enough of his uplifting, euphoric tracks, running the gamut between electro and dubstep. Today fans can get their hands on his brand new Open Window EP, featuring four relentless, peak-time cuts. We caught up with Torre to find out which five artists on SoundCloud are rocking his world at the moment.

MitiS' Open Window EP is available now on Beatport and all other digital music stores on July 2.

1. OTT

3. Deadmau5
Every synth, every drum sample is perfect.

4. Caspian
Their sound is of like no other. It has such melody, but also brings a whole new innovative side to alternative instrumental.

5. MaHi

10 Things we found at Brooklyn's one of a kind Northside Festival.

This weekend, Williamsburg exploded in a cacophony of bands, from the country's young and unknown talent to the still-kicking rockers that inspired them. Northside Music Festival catered directly to the finely-tuned taste of Brooklynites, with curated showcases from the greatest names in independent music, along with some excellent events from savvy sponsors. We spent the weekend walking around a neighborhood throbbing with sound and came back with some new favorites, rekindled old flames and learned what it is that makes Northside a festival like no other.

1. Brooklynites will walk ten minutes from the G train in pouring rain to watch Kim Gordon hit her guitar with a drum stick, and they'll love it.

The ex-Sonic Youth front woman was joined by Bill Nace in her new project Body/Head, to perform to a mesmerized crowd. Ex-Bikini Kill rockers Kathleen Hanna and Kathi Wilcox also came as a late addition with their band The Julie Ruin to the great surprise of the grunge-hungry crowd. Nineties pandemonium reigned.

2. When Brooklyn Bowl hosts a dance competition, it is not to be taken lightly.

There was not a head not bouncing along when Jonathan Toubin spun rock'n'roll and swing '45s into the night at Brooklyn Bowl, but when the dance contest started at 1 am, things got serious. Hundreds of beaming patrons proudly donned a number and hit the dance floor to battle it out for the grand title of champion. We did learn a key precaution though...

3. If a man clad in all-white denim approaches you at a dance contest, exercise caution. He means business.

This white knight was busting out every move in the book with remarkable enthusiasm all over the stage. Sadly, after failing to win, he could be found gazing out over his field of broken dreams from the back of the dance floor. Someone give this guy a gold star for effort.

4. When Solange plays to a thousand screaming fans, good boyfriends try not to look too bored.

McCarren Park became a sea of excitement when Solange took the stage to get feet moving and iPhones flashing. While almost all of the women in the crowd stood in adoration, some faithful companions did their best to look like they were having a good time. Hopefully it paid off when Solange encouraged the ladies in the audience to start gyratin'. This guy had a moment of weakness...

5. Northsiders put a new spin on festival fashion.

When a festival doesn't involve the usual risks associated with rain, heat, dust and mosh pits, it's easy to wear exactly whatever takes your fancy. Festival goers everywhere were dressed to the hilt, from hipster-chic to un-ironic '80s punk. This guy wore a cheese grater, and he loved it.

6. Streets are much better when there is grass on them

It wouldn't be a festival if you didn't sit on the grass under the sun at least for a little while. Passers by were so happy to see some green on Bedford Avenue that they immediately started a Facebook group to move McCarren park closer to North 5th Street (not really).

7. Opportunists make the world go round

The Sweet Street Symphony kept the festival spirits high with their upbeat tunes that put a spring in the step of Williamsburg's wanderers. The crowd reaction just goes to show that you don't need to be booked by Pitchfork to enjoy a steak dinner after your set.

8. People still go nuts for '80s punk bands

If there was a record for the number of stage dives per minute at a rock show, the Rocks Off showcase featuring Adolescents and Subhumans smashed it. The only thing more remarkable than the chaotic crowd's constant desire to be on top of one another was the way they went wild when Dick Lucas took a break from storming the stage to draw the raffle they arranged to aid abandoned pets.

9. Projectors are the new backdrops

And what a great way to disguise a dummer with bad hair! This year several bands opted to fill the audiences eyes with wonder by abandoning the usual backdrop for a younger, hotter digital projector that sent shifting lights over the surface of everyone and everything on stage. The effect used above by Monogold, generated a cinematic experience to accompany their dreamy pop hooks. Perhaps we can look forward to Lady Gaga projecting costume changes in future to save time.

10. Even seasoned rockers aren't immune to free whiskey

Brooklyn natives The So So Glos played their way through a roaring (slightly messy) set at a Jameson showcase. The adoring audience were more than happy to see the band were socially lubricated, and in the end, what is Northside if not a jarring reminder that rock'n'roll isn't dead?

The Rockaways' new destination has everything you need.

Brooklynites and Queensmen rejoice! At long last, Playland Motel is bringing the excitement, cutting-edge design and convenience of the city you love to the Rockaways – and you will never have to walk a mile on hot sand for a warm beer and a mediocre hot dog again!

Founded by Williamsburg trendsetters Robin Scott and Jamie Wiseman of Output, along with Diego Galarza and Eduardo Suarez of El Almacen and Rosarito's Fish Shack; The Playland Motel will be home to 12 seasonal rentals, three bars, two restaurants, a 7,000 square foot indoor/outdoor bar and a boutique. Most importantly, Playland will be one of the few fully licensed outdoor areas in the Rockaways, giving you everything you could want in a weekend.

The motel that sits in place of the old Tap & Grill, has been dreamed up to "merge urban hipster demands with universal beach culture," and boy does it look like the hipsters they spoke to were demanding. Not only can you catch music and fashion events, eat to your heart's content, shop, and grab a drink on the gorgeous beach deck (or in the air conditioning if you are that way inclined); you can stay in the motel and do it all again tomorrow.

If you've got nowhere to be – or even if you do – you can sleep in one of 12 rooms, individually styled by internationally renowned artists including Pat Conlon, Fede Saenz and Harif Guzman. Other sneaky additions include designs by A Hotel Life's Ben Pundole and Eye Swoon's Athena Calderone.

If it's a new spin on the Hotel Chelsea experience that you want, Playland is happy to have you long-term, or at least until you get tired of hanging out in a beautiful spot, surrounded by all of your heart's desires.

Playland's Diner will make Williamsburg natives feel right at home with dishes from El Almacen and Rosarito's Fish Shack, along with brick oven pizzas to be enjoyed under the sun, for the casually upscale beach-goer.

Universally liked tunes like Bossa Nova, Beach Boys, smooth electronica and urban beach music will be curated to provide the ultimate summer mixtape, which also serves as a great soundtrack to the Frisbee game, bike ride or quiet read made possible by Playland's very own retail space.

Throw in a line of apparel to kick off the new urban/beach mutant subculture born of those who refuse to go home, some Italian ice cream and a famer's market (seriously!), and you have reason to spend every weekend of every summer as far away from those park fountains as possible.

Playland is expected to open in time for July 4th festivities at 97-20 Rockaway Beach Blvd, Rockaway Beach, Queens, 11694.

One hundred and fifty craft beers were presented at Savor. We chose the 12 best.

Social media was buzzing on Friday night after the first night of the sixth annual Savor, an event dubbed as "an American craft beer and food experience." Saturday night's event confirmed what all the hubbub was about as 76 small and independent craft brewers presented an impressive 152 craft beers at an elegant soiree held at the Metropolitan Pavilion. Adding the exclamation point to the gathering was each brew being paired with food by a panel of chefs and brewers — some nibbles were sweet, others were savory — thus receiving the same culinary attention normally paid to wine.

Featuring everything ales to wiezenbocks, we set out on a mission to find the 12 best beers of the night. Over the course of a several hours, we went from booth to booth, meeting small brewers from all over the country who (pardon the pun) pour their heart and soul into their small batch creations every day.

While some of the offerings on tap were a bit on the gimmicky side (I'm looking at you, Willoughby Brewing Company's amazing Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter paired with black and tan brownie with butterscotch and pretzel bite), our dirty dozen consisted of standouts from Frederic C. Noir, Heavy Seas, Left Hand, New Belgium Brewing Company, Odin, Schlafly, The Bruery, Newburgh Brewing Company, The Temptress, Three Floyds and Tough Love. After pairing beer all night with local cheese and oysters, to chocolate and brownies, attendees received a nifty goodie bag featuring The Limited, a 750 ml collaboration made by Ommegang, Brooklyn Brewery and Saranac, which had to make the list.

As more people demand to know where their food comes from, Savor reinforced the fact that in craft beer smaller and local is always better.

Like many fashion lovers, we wept a few tears of joy this week when we saw that Isabel Marant was collaborating with H&M. H&M has had an incredible run with their designer limited-edition collections — Versace, Maison Martin Margiela, Karl Lagerfeld — they've all worked with the Swedish mega retailer, causing shopping frenzies and sold-out racks around the world. There are however still lots of high-end designers we wouldn't mind getting our hands on at a mass market price. Here is who we're hoping will create a collection for them in the future.

1. Balmain (pictured): We love this label's rock/baroque edge and can hardly open a fashion magazine without seeing Olivier Rousteing's newest creations in couture spreads. We would love to own more of the label's pieces but... Let's just say Balmain costs big bucks and we wouldn't mind getting our hands on something more affordable.

2. Mary Katrantzou: The Greek London-transplant actually did a capsule collection for another retailer Topshop and the collection was snapped up within minutes (we're totally not bitter about not being able to snag any of it. Nope). Her graphic prints are out of this world and we definitely would not mind having her pieces hanging in our closets.

3. Givenchy: Ricardo Tisci's goth romanticism and cool prints have us begging for more. We would line up for hours to score some of his pieces at H&M.

4. Nicholas Kirkwood: The genius shoe designer consistently produces shoes we want on our feet. A capsule collection would satisfy legions of show lovers around the world.

5. The Blonds: The duo behind The Blonds creates one of a kind pieces worn on stage by celebs like Kylie Minogue and Jenifer Lopez. Can you imagine the sparkly greatness they could create for the masses?

Art Attack's Emily Colucci travels back to NYC, c. 1985 at ClampArt.

Stumbling unexpectedly into ClampArt's reception for their current exhibition NYC, c. 1985, a survey of 1980s New York City through the lens of both famous and lesser-known photographers, I maneuver through a thick crowd of New York art lovers sharing stories of the 1980s and admiring the raw energy of the city. While exhibitions that look back to New York of the 1980s often descend into nostalgia, NYC, c. 1985 avoids this trap by showing a variety of photographers and subjects. Captured by photographers such as Nan Goldin and Amy Arbus, the subjects of NYC, c. 1985 encompass both celebrities like Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Run-D.M.C. and Madonna and the New York landscape such as the suburban homes in West Brighton.

Coinciding with the release of Jeannette Montgomery Barron's monograph Scene, NYC, c. 1985 straddles the period between the burned-out, desolate 1970s and the start of the cleaning up of the seedier New York. While many of the photos celebrate the spikey-haired, self-styling of the punk and new wave era, others reveal the harsh realities of 1980s such as homelessness and the ever-increasing AIDS crisis. Like many exhibitions on this period, the specter of AIDS looms large, as seen in the photograph of playwright and AIDS activist Larry Kramer.

Of the many fascinating photographs, the most engaging for me present the fun-filled yet gritty Downtown scene in clubs such as Danceteria and The Mudd Club. With a slideshow of photographs taken at the Downtown clubs featuring young art stars like Keith Haring, club kids and drag queens, my favorite artist in NYC, c. 1985 undoubtedly is Les Simpson, better known as the drag queen Linda Simpson. Continuing to perform in clubs such as (Le) Poisson Rouge today, Simpson got her start in the always fantastically campy The Pyramid Club. As an active participant, Simpson documented life in the downtown scene from clubs to art installations to ACT-UP demonstrations. Through Simpson's engaging photographs as well as the rest of the exhibition, NYC, c. 1985 manages to still feel fresh even after circa 28 years.

Walking out of NYC, c. 1985, I can't help but wonder what an "NYC, c. 2013" show would look like. Would there be photographs of condos in Williamsburg?
We asked designer dads about their kids in honor of Father's Day.

Father's Day is a great time to walk down memory lane with your dad and remember all the good times you've had together; like the time he taught you how to ride a bike, helped you with your homework or offered you advice in a difficult situation.

In the spirit of honoring fathers on their special day, we reached out to New York City fashion designers to find out more about their dads and in turn about them. What were they like as children? Who threw big childhood tantrums? What was their favorite clothing item as a kid?

Read on to find out more about these fashion forces and their relationships with their dads.

Dr. Jay Degen, father of Lindsay Degen

What was Lindsay like as a kid? Lindsay was an easy child and an adorable kid. Unlike either of her parents, she was able to play multiple musical instruments and loved to perform on stage. She did not seem enjoy any of the three R's in school, but was quite good at all of them. Lindsay always had a great sense of humor, which she probably got from her Dad.
First fashion item purchased on her behalf? Lindsay just had to have a pair of pure white Gucci sunglasses as a young teen. These very cool shades were spotted on Michigan Avenue in Chicago and became the subject of much negotiation.
Most memorable childhood tantrum? Tantrums were not Lindsay's style, but there may have been some interesting moments that I have managed to erase from memory.
Best career advice you've given her? My career advice was to follow what you love, and my personal advice was marry your very best friend and playmate.
Proudest moment? In kindergarten, Lindsay's class was asked to share what they wanted to be when they grew up. The students' replies generally followed the usual pattern with answers like "teacher," "fireman," "astronaut" and "President of the United States." Of course, my heart could not be more filled with pride when I learned from her teacher that Lindsay's answer was truly special: "shoeshiner."

Monte Hoffman, father Mara Hoffman

What was she like as a kid? She was always up for everything! She’s always been a very positive, creative, and social person.
First fashion item purchased on her behalf? I don’t remember a first fashion item that she purchased, but I do remember that even at the age of five she would go up to her room and come downstairs and would walk out in these outfits that were like costumes. She wasn’t buying them, but she was making them from whatever she could find. You never knew what you were going to get but it always sort of worked.
Most memorable childhood tantrum? I don’t remember Mara as having many tantrums. She spoke her mind and was very precocious — she wouldn’t put up with any crap. Mara always does the right thing and treats people right, but she is honest; you always know where you stand with her. She’s very smart and has good values.
Best career advice you’ve given her? I think her mother gave it to her in the beginning, but “Mara, follow your heart”. When I first heard she wanted to go into fashion, I thought, “let’s face it — you couldn’t choose a more expensive and challenging path.” I said, “How are you going to make a living?”
It may have been her Junior year at Parsons and we were at her apartment before going out to dinner. She took a piece of cloth and cut up and sewed a dress in ten minutes and it looked great on her and I thought, “wow she’s the real thing!”.
Proudest moment? There are a lot of proudest moments, but I’m proud of her always. I am so proud of her for juggling everything at the highest level — I don’t know where she gets all the energy! Her husband, her child, and her family come first, but she also has made an amazing career for herself. The proudest moment is that her entire life I’ve been proud — she has never let me not be proud.

Jeff Kallmeyer, father of Daniella Kallmeyer

What was she like as a kid? Daniella was always very kind to others and very sensitive and cared deeply about others' feelings. She also always wanted to snuggle. She loved to sing and dance in front of others and was always willing to put on a show.
First fashion item purchased on his/her behalf? A baby Tomato onesie with a green stem on the top of the red matching beret. It was her favorite.
Most memorable childhood tantrum? She didnt really have tantrums as a kid. The most memorable event, though not a tantrum, was when she slipped and broke her arm at her sister's third birthday party. She cried but we didn't even realize it was broken until the next day because she didn't want to ruin her sister's birthday.
Best career advice you've given her? No matter what, keep on trying if you are doing what you love, and don't let fear of failure hold you back. Recognize and respect the role of others in your success.
Proudest moment? Let me count the ways... From preschool graduation, when you "out of the blue" while we were driving on Falls Chapel Way said "I love you Daddy," your high school fashion show, your 42nd Street lead role performance, your Bravo TV finale, every presentation you've had...

Elwood Lawton, father of Heather Lawton

What was she like as a kid? Challenging, determined — she marched to the beat of her own drum.
First fashion item purchased on his/her behalf? I think it was riding clothes. Heather grew up riding horses.
Most memorable childhood tantrum? When Heather was about four she wanted to ride her siste'rs pony. Her sister was riding and impatient Heather just wanted to have her turn — right now! After crying lots she got her turn and all was well.
Best career advice you've given him/her? Can't climb uphill thinking downhill thoughts. Luck is opportunity with preparations (hard work).
Proudest moment? When she was born.

Murray Farncombe, father of Kaelen Haworth

What was Kaelen like as a kid? Best baby ever! She rarely cried and was a great sleeper. Kaelen had a laid back approach very early on. As the baby sister to her two brothers she had to adapt quickly and of course benefitted by getting to know all their guy friends as they grew older.
First fashion purchased on her behalf? She was always a “real girl” and although I am not able to recall the specifics, it would definitely have been a dress. One of my favorite photos is of Kaelen at about 18 months just sitting on our family room floor in a very pretty white dress, prominently displayed bare feet, and a teddy bear.
Most memorable childhood tantrum? Kaelen didn’t seem to have tantrums, but rather got slowly pissed and stayed quietly pissed until someone noticed and sorted out the object of her anger. Her brothers recognized her strengths and her straight forward approach and routinely used her as the doorman at their parties.
Best career advice you've given her? I am slowly learning that the fashion business is very unlike most others. For this reason, I think the best advice I can give her is to offer very little. She is a pretty good businesswoman and a very capable designer. I have faith that the principles and common sense she learned growing up will hold her in good stead in the business world and so far she has not let me down in any regard.
Proudest moment? I have several. Actually seeing her first fashion show and all others that have come since, and to see what she has been able to accomplish, with no help or input from her family is incredible. I am very proud to see her with her co-workers and people in the business, from buyers to reporters, and notice the respect that she has for them and that they in return have for her. Also, walking her down the aisle at her wedding is pretty tough to beat. Even so, if she wasn’t a fashion designer, and had yet to be married, I would still be a very proud dad. Kaelen is a very special young lady with a great sense of humor and a very warm heart. What’s not to like!

Barry Gallagher, father of Katie Gallagher

What was she like as a child? Katie was shy but very inquisitive. She always "knew" what was going on.
First fashion item purchased on her behalf? Would probably be her puffy pink winter coat that she loved to wear to church or out for a special occasion.
Most memorable tantrum? Hmmm... that's easy! She had an Eeyore stuffed toy and somehow it must have gotten a speck sized hole in it. As I was driving up to Crater Lake in Oregon on our family vacation, she wanted Eyore repaired now and began to throw a major fit! I grabbed the Eeyore and threatened to throw it into Crater Lake, as we looked at it while driving on the road overlooking the spectacular lake. Finally she settled down. It was all I could do!
Best career advice you've given her? I always advised Katie to do whatever would make her happy in regards to her life/career and I really believe she is in the process of doing just that!
Proudest moment? There are many. From her wonderful athletic career (cross country and track), to her many accolades at RISD... But the proudest would be her first Fashion Week at Tribeca Grand in NYC. She was so prepared and it was a great show, to be followed by many more!

Raul Ray Pelaez, father of Suzanne Rae (father pictured with Suzanne's daughter)

What was Suzanne like as a kid? She was funny and a very sweet child. She was always generous and always had her own mind. She was not a regular kid, even from back then. She always spoke her mind and knew what she wanted.
First fashion item purchased on her behalf? Her first year birthday dress.
Most memorable childhood tantrum? One day she decided she wanted two milk bottles in her mouth at the same time. She was a little over a year-old then.
Best career advice you've given her? Be an investment banker [laughs].
Proudest moment? Plenty. At which stage in life? Maybe seeing her as a fashion designer presenting at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

James Veraldi, father of Dana Veraldi of DeerDana

What was he/she like as a kid? She loved babies and little children. She had quite a diverse collection of dolls and loved to take care of her little sister, Amanda (two years younger). She loved to babysit and even today loves caring for children, and has a unique ability to connect with them. Even at a young age, Dana was her own person, and did not succumb to peer pressure or mainstream trends. She loved to be creative in her style, hair, school projects, and using the home video camera. She quickly developed self-confidence and was generous and compassionate with her family and friends
First fashion item purchased on her behalf? Excluding vintage clothing at consignment shops or garage sales (which she still loves), it would have to be shoes.
Most memorable childhood tantrum? No one specific tantrum comes to mind, but when Dana would get upset, her big, beautiful, brown eyes produced what we called, alligator tears. We did force Dana to join a soccer team against her will, and she went on the field and refused to run after the ball.
Best career advice you've given him/her? Do what you love and be passionate about it.
Proudest moment? So many moments that I can think of and these include her work with The Misshapes and the photo book they created; being one of the “it” girls featured in Elle magazine, having a DeerDana shirt worn by a supermodel and featured in Time's Style magazine, DeerDana shirts in The Gap store and having her little brother play a role in a music video.

Bruce Taylor, father of Tanya Taylor

What was she like as a kid? Fun, fun and more fun! She liked to draw and dance and debate. I wanted her to become a chicken farmer. Not interested!
What was the first fashion item purchased for her? Diapers, of course. Followed by so many shoes!
Most memorable childhood tantrum? She thought I should go to bed at the same time. She and democracy lost. Authoritarianism and I won.
Best career advice you've given her? Study orangutans. No. Follow your dream, dream big and make a difference in the world!
Proudest moment? April 20, 2013 when she married Michel Pratte. Together they are the best!
