The exhibit “Sobre Parede”, by São Paulo native Célia Euvaldo, is on display at the Tomie Ohtake Institute. The artist is showing 10 oil painting works in his first solo event, which runs until July 28^th.

Para esta exposição, Célia fez o chamado site-specific, que ocorre quando o artista cria obras especialmente para o ambiente onde vai expor. Neste caso, suas pinturas foram realizadas diretamente nas paredes das salas em que acontece a mostra. Ela, que costuma pintar sobre grandes telas, aceitou o convite do Instituto para realizar sua arte no próprio espaço expositivo.

For this exhibit, Célia created a so-called site-specific work, which occurs when an artist creates a work of art specifically for the place in which it will be displayed. In this case, her paintings were made directly on the walls of the exhibition rooms. Although accustomed to painting on large canvases, she accepted the invitation from the Institute to paint in the actual exhibition space.

Nas obras presentes da mostra, a artista manteve sua característica técnica de utilizar apenas duas tonalidades e cor sobre cor. A artista usa preto sobre branco ou sobreposições da mesma cor, apresentando relevos que compõem seu trabalho abstrato.

In these works, the artist maintains her characteristic technique of using only two tones and color over color. She uses black over white or overlays of the same color, creating reliefs that compose her abstract work.

Em vez de utilizar pincéis, como faz quando pinta sobre tela, Célia fez uso de vassouras e rodos para deixar a sua marca nas paredes do Instituto Tomie Ohtake, o que enriquece as obras com relevos distintos quanto ao material utilizado e mantém a intensidade das “pinceladas” da artista.

Instead of using paintbrushes, as she does when painting on canvas, Célia made use of brooms and squeegees to leave her mark on the walls of the Tomie Ohtake Institute, which enrich the works with distinct traces of the material used and maintain the intensity of the artist’s “brush strokes”.

Célia Euvaldo expõe seus trabalhos desde a década de 80. Antes de se focar na pintura, arte para a qual se voltou em meados dos anos 90, a artista também fazia desenhos sobre tela. Suas obras já foram expostas em locais como o Museu da Gravura Cidade de Curitiba, na Lemos de Sá Galeria, em Belo Horizonte, Galeria Arte Ipanema, no Rio de Janeiro e na Estação Pinacoteca, em São Paulo.

Célia Euvaldo hás been showing her works since the 1980’s. Before focusing on paintings, the art form that she turned to since the mid 1990’s, she also made canvas drawings. Her works have already been displayed in places such as the Museu da Gravura Cidade de Curitiba (City of Curitiba Print Museum), Lemos de Sá Gallery in Belo Horizonte, Arte Ipanema Gallery in Rio de Janeiro, and Estação Pinacoteca in São Paulo.

“O GIF foi inspirado pelo clássico jogo das garrafas”. Christian explica. (Lembram-se? Todos sentavam-se em círculo e um dos participantes girava a garrafa e quem era alvo dela quando parava de girar, teria que enfrentar a Verdade ou Desafio). “Eu sempre amei o ícone do coração, e usei muitas vezes em meus trabalhos através dos anos. Então eu quis criar algo descomplicado e ao mesmo tempo criativamente conectado à garrafa Perrier. Depois de experimentar algumas ideias, eu vi que duas garrafas cruzadas podem formar um coração. Foi uma epifania romântica e criativa!”

Landscapes are the subject most explored by this photographer from São Paulo, but not in the common way you’d see in a tourism magazine, for example. Marcos Vilas Boas goes beyond the obvious.

Em 1997, Vilas Boas começou a captar imagens para seu projeto Horizonte Reto. Nele, o artista explora a geometria e as cores impressionantes formadas pela união entre o céu e o mar.

In 1997, Vilas Boas began capturing images for his project, Horizonte Reto. In the project, the artist explores the geometry and impressive colors formed by the union of sky and sea.

Mas, não são apenas simples fotos de um belo horizonte. São retratos de um momento único, influenciado pelo clima e incidência de luz natural. Se está chovendo, ventando ou fazendo sol, o mesmo lugar se transforma sob a lente do artista: sempre com um efeito diferente.

But they are not just simple photos of a beautiful horizon. They are portraits of a unique moment, influenced by the weather and the incidence of natural light. Whether it may be raining, windy, or sunny, the same location is transformed under the artist’s lens: always with a different effect. 

Algumas fotos contam com cores mais brilhantes, outras muito claras, como se fosse o horizonte de um deserto e até mesmo em preto e branco. O artista manipula as imagens e dá um resultado único a cada uma delas.

Some photos have brighter colors, others very light, as if it were the horizon of a desert, and even black and white. The artist manipulates the images, yielding a unique result for each one.

Ainda seguindo a linha de seus olhares do horizonte, o fotógrafo criou a série Cenários, na qual ele capta imagens noturnas, dessa vez, porém, com a iluminação artificial presente. Aproveitando este contraste entre luz e escuridão, Vilas Boas proporciona misteriosas visões da noite.

Continuing with his line of looking toward the horizon, the photographer created the series Cenários, in which he captures nocturnal images, except that this time with the presence of artificial illumination. Given this contrast between light and darkness, Vilas Boas provides mysterious visions of the night.

Outro estudo dos horizontes é a série Los Kiltros, em que fotografa animais em primeiro plano com amplas paisagens ao fundo. Porém, não é apenas este meio que guia o trabalho do fotógrafo: em Mulher, por exemplo, o fotógrafo capta a nudez feminina sob luzes que criam um efeito surreal.

Another study of horizons is the Los Kiltros series, in which he photographs animals in the foreground with vast landscapes in the background. However, this isn’t the only medium that guides the photographer’s work: in Mulher, for example, he captures female nudity under lights that create a surreal effect. 

Além de se inspirar em temas grandiosos como o céu e o horizonte, Vilas Boas também confere seu olhar poético a assuntos mais corriqueiros: artistas e celebridades já posaram para retratos icônicos,  que evidenciam as ilimitadas possibilidades do artista.

Aside from being inspired by grandiose terms like the sky and the horizon, Vilas Boas also gives his poetic eye to more ordinary matters: artists and celebrities have already posed for iconic photos, which evidence the unlimited possibilities of the artist.

A wealth of contemporary Colombian art can be seen at Casa Daros, in Rio de Janeiro. The exhibit, called Cantos Cuentos Colombianos, brings together a number of works from important artists of the South American country.

A mostra é a primeira da Casa Daros carioca, inaugurada em março e que está com um acervo de 75 trabalhos que pertencem à fundação suíça Daros Latinoamerica. Dentre eles, estão obras da famosa escultora Doris Salcedo, Miguel Angel Rojas, Fernando Arias, Oscar Muñoz e outros nomes.

The exhibit is the first at Casa Daros Rio de Janeiro, which was inaugurated in March and has a permanent collection of 75 works belonging to the Swiss foundation, DarosLatinoamerica. Among them are works from the famous sculptor Doris Salcedo, Miguel Angel Rojas, Fernando Arias, Oscar Muñoz, and others.

Nas 11 salas separadas para a mostra, dividem-se pinturas, vídeos, fotografias, esculturas, instalações...boa parte delas retratam guerras e tragédias, como é o caso de “Musa Paradisíaca”, instalação de José Alejandro Restrepo que remonta as chacinas que aconteciam em plantações de banana.

Divided among the exhibit’s 11 rooms are paintings, videos, photographs, sculptures, and installations... the majority of them depicting war and tragedy, such as the “Musa Paradisíaca”, an installation by José Alejandro Restrepo that reconstructs the massacres that took place in banana plantations. 

A exposição fica em cartaz até setembro.

The exhibit runs until September.

There is a place in the city of Rio de Janeiro where a factory of creative minds exists. It is none other than the BHering factory, which used to produce sweets but has since become a space for various artists.

A grande construção abandonada se transformou em uma série de ateliês. Vários artistas que não tinham condições de ter um espaço próprio ocuparam a fábrica para criar e também expor suas obras. Hoje, são 52 artistas e 21 empresas instalados.

The huge abandoned building became a huge collective workshop. Many artists who would have otherwise been unable to open their own spaces have occupied the factory to create and exhibit their works. Today, there are 52 artists and 21 companies in all.

Lá, encontram-se todos os tipos de arte. Esculturas, pinturas, instalações, colagem, performances, fotografia e muito mais. Diversos artistas, como Barrão, conhecido por suas esculturas envolvendo objetos do cotidiano, especialmente a colagem de louças. 

All types of art can be found there. Sculptures, paintings, installations, collages, performance, photography, and much more. Various artists, such as Barrão, who is known for his sculptures involving day to day objects, especially his dishware collages. 

Outra artista de destaque é a paulistana Vivian Caccuri. Ela que foi a primeira a utilizar o espaço da fábrica como ateliê, é uma das principais responsáveis pela revitalização do espaço da BHering. Com sua arte, mostra como a música influi na sensação de percepção do tempo e da presença física. Veja o vídeo da performance “Maquiagem Aumentada”:

Another featured artist is the Paulistana, Vivian Caccuri. She was the first to use the factory space as a workshop, she is one of the people most responsible for the revitalization of the BHering space. Vivian e os outros locatários da BHering sofrem ainda com a questão de ocupação do espaço. Os antigos donos do terreno tentam, através de um processo judicial, retomar a posse da fábrica. Para lutar pelo local, os artistas se juntaram e fundaram a Associação Criativa Orestes 28 (nome da rua e número onde a fábrica está situada). Por enquanto, eles continuam ali por conta de uma liminar obtida.

Vivian and the other Bhering tenants still suffer with the occupation of the space. The former owners of the property, through a legal process, are trying to repossess the factory. To fight for the property, the artists have joined forces and founded the Orestes 28 Creative Association (name of the street and lot number where the factory is located). For now, they continue at the location because of an injunction that was granted.

A região, inclusive, tem se tornado um importante polo artístico. A antiga fábrica da BHering fica na Zona Portuária, onde, recentemente, foi inaugurado o Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC).

In fact, the region has turned into an important artistic hub. The old BHering factory is located in the Port Area, where the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC) was recently inaugurated.

Productions from the famous German art and design school, Bauhaus, have come to São Paulo in the exhibit Bauhaus.Photo.Film, on display at Sesc Pinheiros.

A mostra traz trabalhos feitos tanto em fotografias como vídeos pelos frequentadores da escola no período de 1919 e 1933, anos em que a Bauhaus permaneceu aberta.

The showing features photography and video works produced by students at the school from 1919 to 1933, the period in which Bauhaus remained open.

Na parte de imagens, 100 fotos foram selecionadas dentre as mais de 40 mil existentes no arquivo Bauhaus. Dessas, encontram-se trabalhos de László Moholy-Nagy, Lucia Moholy e Irene Bayer.

In the images section, 100 photos were selected out of the more than 40 thousand in the Bauhaus archives. Included in these are works by László Moholy-Nagy, Lucia Moholy, and Irene Bayer.

No segundo andar, está uma instalação com 12 vídeos que trazem filmes raros de alunos da Bauhaus e de outros grandes nomes da época.

On the second floor, an installation with 12 videos brings together rare films by Bauhaus students and other great names of the time.

A exposição traz o conceito da arte imagética pós Primeira Guerra Mundial, o panorama cultural de um país em reconstrução e como isso influenciou o segmento nos anos seguintes.

The exhibit brings forth the concept of post World War One imagery art, the cultural panorama of a country in reconstruction, and how this influenced the segment in the years to follow.

The art of photography takes urban shape in the work of Patricia Thompson, who specializes in architecture and design.

Patrícia é carioca, mas foi quando morou em Nova York que viu uma paixão despertar em si. Depois de fazer o curso na escola Big Apple, uma das mais famosas do mundo, ela seguiu para o rumo de fotografar construções e ambientes decorados.

Patrícia is from Rio de Janeiro, but it was while living in New York that she awakened a passion within her. After completing a course at the Big Apple, one of the world’s most famous schools, she went on to photograph construction sites and decorated rooms. 

Durante os seis anos que viveu na metrópole americana e estudou fotografia, Patrícia diz que descobriu sua vontade de desvendar a alma das pessoas através do olhar de seus lares.

During the six years that she was living in the American metropolis studying photography, Patrícia says that she discovered her desire to uncover people’s souls by looking at their homes. 

Ao voltar para o Rio de Janeiro, sua cidade natal, depois de todo o tempo vivido em Nova York, ela trouxe um pouco de sua experiência de lá para ser exposta na Galeria Huma Art Projects. O trabalho em questão era o “Abstracted Urbanism”, que são fotos de edifícios tiradas em ângulos que trazem algo especial para a imagem. É como se fossem montagens feitas na hora do clique.

Returning to her hometown of Rio de Janeiro after all that time living in New York, she brought back some of her experience from there to be exhibited at the Huma Art Projects Gallery. The work in question was the “Abstracted Urbanism”, which is a series of photos of buildings taken from angles that bring something special to the image. It’s as if they’re montages put together at the moment of the click.

A exposição realizada no ano passado na Huma recebeu o nome de City of Lights. Além das tradicionais fotos de edificações à luz do dia, ela também fez imagens à noite. O resultado foi o de composições incríveis entre as luzes da cidade e seus prédios.

The exhibition, which took place last year at the Huma, was named “City of Lights”. In addition to the traditional photos of buildings in the daylight, she also took images at night. The result was incredible compositions of lights from the city and its buildings. 

Patrícia tem um site com suas fotografias de arquitetura e decoração tiradas ao redor do mundo. Ela já passou por Portugal e Marrocos, além de outras cidades brasileiras como São Paulo e Trancoso. Ela já expôs seus trabalhos em mostras nas cidades de Milão e Miami.

Patrícia has a site with her photographs of architecture and decoration taken around the world. She’s passed through Portugal and Morocco as well as other Brazilian cities such as São Paulo and Trancoso. She’s already exhibited her work at showings in Milan and Miami.

Street art, drawings, sculptures... all of it portraying the urban universe. That’s what comes to mind when you speak of Antonio Bokel, a rising artist from Rio de Janeiro whom we’ve already spoken about here.

Antonio Bokel começou a ficar conhecido por suas intervenções nas ruas, não só nas do Rio de Janeiro, sua cidade natal, mas também em São Paulo e no exterior. É possível encontrar o grafite do artista em cidades como Nova York (EUA), Tóquio (Japão), Paris (França), Budapeste (Hungria) e Zagreb (Croácia).

Antonio Bokel started becoming known for his street art, not only in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro but also in São Paulo and abroad. One can find the artist’s graffiti in cities such as New York (USA), Tokyo (Japan), Paris (France), Budapest (Hungary), and Zagreb (Croatia).

O grafite de Bokel é mais do que colorir muros e embelezar cidades. Segundo ele próprio, ao longo dos anos foi tendo contato com diversos tipos de signos, até começar a formar os seus próprios, que conversam entre si e com o ambiente urbano, seja em forma de crítica ou outro tipo de mensagem.

Bokel’s graffiti is more than just coloring walls and beautifying cities. By his own account, he had been having contact with various types of signs over the years until beginning to form his own, which converse with each other and with the urban environment, whether in the form of criticism or other types of messages.

Além do grafite, o artista segue pelos caminhos do desenho, da pintura, colagens e esculturas. Sim, um campo só não é o suficiente para a criatividade e necessidade de se expressar de Bokel. Mostra-se um artista multifacetado a todo hora, que tem tempo até para a moda.

Besides graffiti, the artist also follows the line of drawing, painting, collages, and sculptures. Yes, one field alone is not sufficient for Bokel’s creativity and need for expression. He proves to be a multifaceted artist at all times, who even has time for fashion. 

O carioca tem uma formação rica em artes. Fez cursos de fotografia e história da arte na cidade italiana de Florença, onde, em 2003, teve a oportunidade de realizar sua primeira exposição individual. Em 2004, graduou-se em design gráfico no Rio de Janeiro.

The Rio native has a rich arts background. He took courses in photography and art history in the Italian city of Florence where, in 2003, he had the opportunity to hold his first individual exhibit. In 2004, he graduated with a graphic design degree in Rio de Janeiro.

Além das intervenções feitas no exterior, ele já expôs na SP Arte, no Rojo Art Space, em Barcelona, no Goldman Capital Arts, em Madrid, também na capital holandesa Amsterdam, dentre outros locais. Uma de suas obras, inclusive, agora faz parte do acervo do Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM-RJ).

Aside from the street art he’s created abroad, he’s also had exhibits at SP Arte, Rojo Art Space in Barcelona, Goldman Capital Arts in Madrid, and also in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam, among others. In fact, one of his works is now part of the permanent collection at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art (MAM-RJ).

No momento, Antonio Bokel está com sua mostra “Degrau” em exibição na recém-inaugurada Galeria Contempo, em São Paulo. Como não podia ser diferente, estão expostos seus trabalhos de todos os seus campos de atuação, e falam sobre o universo urbano.

French artist Laurent Chéhère speaks of reality through the fiction in his works. And from May 24th, some of them can be seen at Galeria Lume.

Sua série intitulada “Flying Houses” também dá nome à exposição que entrará em cartaz nesta semana, em São Paulo. Nela, em cada uma das obras, está uma casa flutuando no céu, com a presença de fios, como se tivesse levitado junto a tudo em que estava presa.

His series titled "Flying Houses" also gives name to the exhibition that will be going on display this week in São Paulo.  In it, each of his works boasts a house floating in the sky, with the presence of wires, as if being levitated along with everything else it was attached to.

Mas, se apenas ao bater o olho parece algo lúdico, típico da imaginação de crianças, ao se analisar atentamente percebe-se que as coisas não são bem assim.

But, if with a mere blink of the eye it may look like something playful, typical of a child’s imagination, when analyzing closely you realize that things aren’t quite that way. 

As casas que aparecem nas obras são partes de residências presentes em bairros pobres na região nordeste de Paris. A melancolia e a triste realidade pela qual passa quem vive nesses lugares, mas que não são lembradas nos cartões postais nem pelo governo da cidade luz.

The houses that appear in the exhibit are parts of residences found in poor neighborhoods of northeast Paris. The melancholy and sad reality experienced by those who live in these places, but that isn’t remembered in postcards nor by the government of the City of Light.

O artista se inspirou no filme “Le Ballon Rouge”, de Albert Lamorisse, no conceito e na composição das imagens. O local de filmagem da obra cinematográfica é o mesmo utilizado por Chéhère em sua série de casas flutuantes.

The artist was inspired by the film “Le Ballon Rouge”, by Albert Lamorisse, for the concept and composition of the images. The filming location used for the cinematic piece is the same that Chéhère utilized in his series of floating houses.

In the visual arts arena, Ricardo is known for interventions that provoke sensations from sensory stimuli in people. 

*Hipotético fluido

O artista não tenta fazer uma representação direta da realidade, mas sim provocar a imaginação a entrar em ação, ao reagir com as sensações provocadas a partir das experiências com suas obras.

The artist does not attempt to make a direct representation of reality, but rather, to provoke the imagination to get in on the action, to react to the sensations caused by experiencing his works.

Suas instalações costumam ser compostas por áudio e vídeo. Cores, luzes intermitentes ou fixas, um som variável, ora hipnotizante, ora perturbador. É preciso ficar por alguns minutos no ambiente, para poder sentir o poder de sua obra e descobrir qual a reação causada.

His installations are usually comprised of audio and video. Colors, intermittent or steady lighting, varying sound, sometimes hypnotizing, sometimes disturbing. One needs to remain in the space for a few minutes in order to feel the power of his work and discover what kind of reaction it causes.

Recentemente, Ricardo esteve com a instalação “Carta Perspética do Intuito” em cartaz no Paço das Artes.  O artista também teve exposições individuais em locais como o MIS (Museu de Imagem e Som), Galeria Vermelho, Centro Cultural São Paulo e até a Gallery 33, em Londres.
