約1200年前、19歳の若き空海（弘法大師）が修行の場として選んだのが室戸岬で、波に浸食されてできた洞窟「御厨人窟（みくろど）」で寝起きし、この地の空と海を眺めながら難行苦行の末に悟りを開いたと伝えられています。この洞窟から見える空と海にちなんで、弘法大師は「空海」と名乗るようになったとも。そのためか、この洞窟には空海の霊力が宿るとされ、近年は心と体をいやすスピリチュアルなパワースポットとして人気を呼んでいます。
