ザ・ペニンシュラ東京の24Fの「Peter バー」のシグネチャーカクテルが「東京ジョー/Tokyo Joe」です。シグネチャーカクテル signature cocktail とは、そのバーを象徴する代表的なカクテルのことで、東京ジョーは、その名前の通りTOKYOらしい一杯です。
カクテルの名前は、ハンフリー・ボガートが主演した1949年のハリウッド映画『東京ジョー』に由来します。第2次世界大戦前後に銀座にあったTokyo Joe'sというバーが舞台になっています。そこを経営していたジョーが、自らのアイデンティティーを取り戻すため悪と対決する様を描いています。約60年後にザ・ペニンシュラ東京が建つこととなる日比谷交差点もシーンに登場します。ちなみに、BRYAN FERRYもTokyo Joeという曲を歌っていますね。
ボンベイサファイア・梅酒・ドランブイ（ハンフリー・ボガートが一番好んだと言われるお酒）にクランベリージュース・レモンジュースをブレンドしたカクテルは、お酒の甘味とクランベリーやレモンの酸味が見事に融合し、マイルドな口当たりで、かつ爽やかな後味の残るカクテルです。
ザ・ペニンシュラ東京のロビーの天井周りをモチーフに現代的要素を盛り込んだデザインをした特注グラスは、とても美しく必見です。ジョーのように熱き想いでいまを駆け抜ける方に楽しんでいただきたいカクテルです。
“Tokyo Joe” is a signature cocktail of Peter Bar on the 24th floor of the Peninsula Tokyo. “Signature cocktail” is the cocktail to represent and signify a bar and Tokyo Joe is, to be true to its name, a drink that is highly reminiscent and suggestive of Tokyo.
The name of the cocktail comes from the 1949 Hollywood movie “Tokyo Joe,” starring Humphrey Bogart. The setting of the movie was a bar in Ginza called Tokyo Joe’s, before and after World War II. The movie depicts the struggle against evil in the process of bar’s manager, Joe’s efforts to recover his own identity. There is a scene at Hibiya intersection, where the location of the Peninsula Tokyo would be about 60 years later. Incidentally, one of Bryan Ferry’s songs is also “Tokyo Joe.”
The cocktail, made from Bombay Sapphire, ume liquor, drambuie (Humphrey Bogart’s favorite liquor) blended with cranberry juice and lemon juice, is a masterful combination of sweetness of liquor with sourness of cranberry and lemon. Its mild and refreshing flavor lingers on the tongue.
You should check out the very beautiful custom-made glasses with the motif of the ceiling rim pattern over the lobby at the Peninsula Tokyo. This cocktail is recommended to present-day Joes, who live in the moment with great passion just like a meteor shooting through the night sky.
