Fashion Survival: 5 Must Have Fall Items

Got Style

A clothing store for the dapper man that also offers barber services (“haircuts and towel shaves”) and an in-store tailor shop? Gotstyle is the brainchild of owner Melissa Austria, who champions quality menswear like slim-fitting suits by Denmark brand J.Fedders, at prices well under what you’d pay in high-end boutiques. That, plus Austria has a knack for a subtle kind of edge (read: risqué colours and stripes) that provide a nice counterpart to the sober hues of said suits. From casual to formal, Gotstyle’s got you covered at its street-level Bathurst storefront. Societe Perrier asked Austria to make a list of five Gotstyle items any modern man would kill for this fall season.

1. The evening sportcoat | Haight & Ashbury | $350

MA: “Why look like every other guy when you go out at night, just because they don't want to stand out doesn't mean you have to conform. An evening sportcoat is a sophisticated and eye catching way to stand out. The Haight & Ashbury evening jacket is trim and short (to make you look leaner and taller), one button with leather trim taping at the lapel (so you can't mistake it for a work blazer). You can wear the evening sportcoat in a pinch to dress up your jeans and T-shirts, but it always looks better with a slim cut French cuff shirt and a pocket square for added flair. And by the way, dressing better when you go out makes it a lot easier to get numbers at the end of the night.”

2. Camo pants | Rogue | $165

MA: “The perfect pant that will help bridge you from jeans to the new alternative bottoms. This slim cargo will go from casual (pop it with a bright polo or sweater) to going out (wear it with the aforementioned evening jacket). Rogue's trim fit, with articulation at the knee (the designer is an avid motorcross fan) and great pocket styling gives you an edge your jeans never could.”

3. Grandfather sweater | Marshall Artist | $250

MA: “Who knew that looking like your granddad could be so cool? (Well, he was a better dresser than your dad!) Look for great details like shawl collars, fair isles, toggle buttons or vintage style wood ones in chunkier, heavier knits. The sweaters are perfect for layering and snuggling.”

4. Wool ties | Altea | $110

MA: “When it's cold outside and you're rocking a flannel suit, do the suit justice and wear a tie that's as warm and fuzzy as the suit. A wool tie gives your suit a rich feel (and much better than a flimsy silk tie). A solid one works wonders to ground a bolder check shirt when worn with a suit.”

5. Dress boots | NOBRAND | $230

MA: “Sure you can use a rubber when you want to keep your shoes clean and dry, but sometimes you want to be able to just go out and not have to worry about it (and then where to do you put the rubbers when you're out?) With a dress boot, they are nice enough to wear with your suits and functional enough to keep your feet dry in winter when you head out for post-work drinks. NOBRAND has classic brogue detailing with a waterproof rubber sole.
