Motionball: There Goes the Nightlife
Friday night at the Carlu, in typical Toronto fashion, was a bedazzled who's who of namesakes across all industries, societies, cultures, and classes. This year's motionball Gala, Welcome to the Nightlife, was one of those swanky affairs that pops up maybe once or twice a season. Glammed up giving, if you will. The fantastic not-for-profit – which was conceived in 2002 by the Etherington brothers (Paul, Mark, and Sean) – raises funds to benefit the Special Olympics, and has, in its 11 years, grown nationwide and raised over $2 million.
The evening began with a VIP reception. Cocktails and champers and pints were raised and sipped, gourmet food stations provided ample sustenance – a two-hour window before the main event was to commence meant appropriate fuelling up was a necessity for longevity – and a silent auction (likely one of the best-curated in this town) prodded at purse-strings and pocketed wallets.
CP24 Breakfast co-host Melissa Grelo played to her strengths, co-hosting the night as well. The crowd was as jubilant as it was dapper; women in gowns and cocktail frocks sashayed about as men in suits with bow ties tugged lightly at their tight collars. Once the main event began the Carlu's populace doubled as throngs of Toronto socialites and philanthropists crowded the 7th floor expanse. House/Electro duo Kissette and DJ Skratch Bastid brought the energy to 'frenetic' as motionball brought on the 'Nightlife', the sea of suits and skirts brought about the celebration...and another massive success was rolling.
