Giving Thanks For 3 Awesome Cocktails

By Kirk Pynchon

This time of year there is a lot to be thankful for: friends, family, health. More importantly, it’s also a time to be really thankful for artfully prepared, great tasting cocktails! Some of Los Angeles’ top mixologists are embracing the flavors of Thanksgiving and creating cocktails that are not only tasty, but bring that holiday spirit as well. Here are three drinks to get you ready for Turkey Day.

1. Jemima Knows Best at The Thirsty Crow

Mixologist Ky Soto’s newest creations use warm, comforting flavors that range from sweet to smoky. One of his faves, Jemima Knows Best, blends Famous Grouse Scotch, Aunt Jemima Maple Syrup and Benedictine Liqueur — stirred and served up in a coupe with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. ”With a fall menu, I think maple and cinnamon,” says Sotto. “In this drink I had to use Aunt Jemima Maple Syrup – I grew up eating waffles with Aunt Jemima Syrup every morning.”

2. Punkin’Spice-Tini at Bigfoot West

Bigfoot West in Culver City embraces Thanksgiving with mixologist Vanessa Kemling’s Punkin’ Spice-Tini. A luscious mix of Stoli Vanilla, Kemling’s own house made organic pumpkin puree and Irish Cream, topped with whip, a dash of cinnamon and allspice served in a coupe. Think of it as pumpkin pie in a boozy, drinkable form.

Bigfoot West also serves another Thanksgiving inspired cocktail known as Kemling’s Maple Leaf: Rittenhouse 100 proof rye, cinnamon, brown sugar, simple maple syrup, and flamed orange served on ice.

3. Tolstoy at Oldfield’s Liquor Room

Culver City’s Oldfield’s Liquor Room is a haven for classic cocktail lovers, boasting a selection of over 20 unique house made specialties. Mixologist Feisser Cardenas employs cloves and cinnamon in the Tolstoy. Muddled cloves, vodka, Fernet Jelinek, fresh squeezed orange juice and Farlernum served up with a cinnamon stick is the perfect warm and spicy drink for a cool Thanksgiving night (or as cool as it can get in sunny L.A.).
