In My Air: Everyday Functionality with a Designer Aesthetic

By Angelica Martin

When friends and business partners Kyle Awtry and Israel Valencia teamed up in the Spring 2012 to launch In My Air, they knew they wanted to create a line of wearable avant-garde pieces that marry the functionality of performance wear and the sophistication of high design.

With the unveiling of their collection for Fall 2012, this focused, L.A.-based duo is well on their way to accomplishing their goal, by producing an entire collection of functional pieces with a designer aesthetic that can take the modern woman anywhere from the office, to drinks, to a day date in the park. We recently caught up with the two designers to discuss their latest collection and gain a bit more insight about the vision behind In My Air.

Okay, first things first. Describe the girl who you design for, the girl who loves In My Air.
Kyle Awtry and Israel Valencia: Our girl likes to have fun and go out. She likes to eat well and take care of her body. She has a playful and ironic way of dressing that shows her individuality without a big fuss.

How is In My Air unique?
We are setting out to merge the functionality of performance wear and a designer aesthetic. [We] fill a gap between the avant-garde and the practical, the spontaneous and the thoughtful.

What can we expect to see from your Fall 2012 collection?
We took classic and tailored fabrics to give our girl a buttoned up and dark look. This made our small accents of mesh and silk gauze pop, creating an unexpected contrast. [This collection] gave the brand more depth and style. This season was more controlled with a great mixture of silhouettes and fabrics.

What is one thing you’d like our readers to know about In My Air?
We believe in working as hard as we play.

If you had to describe In My Air in one word, it would be…
Sensible.
