Better Know A Blogger: Ginger Harris of Electric Blogarella

By Tracy Block

Reviving Electric Blogarella from its original 2007 heyday, Ginger Harris decided 2011 was the year to revamp and relaunch her beloved Miami fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog, and transition it into something witty and informative for her growing, like-minded following. A play on Duran Duran’s “Electric Barbarella” and Jane Fonda’s sexy sci-fi alias, Electric Blogarella is just another form of expression for this seasoned Miami journalist, who is also currently Miami Editor of Daily Candy and a health and beauty columnist for NBC Miami. We chatted with Harris to learn more about her blog and her latest views on fashion.

What does Electric Blogarella add to the Miami blog culture?
Ginger Harris: Electric Blogarella is my take on the world around me. I live in Miami, I love fashion and makeup, I meet interesting people on my path. It’s basically me telling the story of what’s in my orbit, a day in my life, a moment in my head, if you will.

As an established journalist and editor in Miami, why is it important in 2012 to host your own blog?
Work-wise, many of the stories I do don’t include post coverage, so I was having these amazing experiences, like meeting Diane von Furstenberg, which is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing, but there was no home for the story. Creating a blog became sort of like a diary, a home for those experiences. It was my way of documenting the events in my life. In that respect, blogs are modern-day diaries that we let everyone read. There’s no one assigning you stories and deadlines. You are your own editor, your own writer. It’s 100 percent you.

Your blog has awarded you plenty of recognition already. In turn, you’ve been asked to co-host some exciting Miami events. Do you enjoy the attention?
I’m not going to lie, I love it. I’ve met great people who are doing amazing things in Miami through the events I’ve hosted. Anyone who’s read my blog knows I’m all about supporting local business and designers. And that’s at the heart of these events. I’m proud to promote that. And I am thankful for every event I get asked to host, every retweet I get, every new person who follows my blog. I’m thrilled people are interested in what I have to say.

In addition to Electric Blogarella, you are currently Miami Editor of Daily Candy, a mother, a wife and an avid yogi. Is it hard to juggle all these balls at once?
I also have an vintage art project I started with my husband, EnchantedPlastic, as well as a children’s bib solution company called Instabib. I’m just the kind of person who can’t sit still. I like being busy. I wouldn’t know what to do otherwise. I think Tom Petty said it best, “You never slow down, you never grow old.”

You’ve written about featured styles from Target to Chanel. As a true fashionista, how sacred do you hold brand names, as opposed to fabulous hidden finds?
You have to know when to splurge and when to save. I’m just as excited about $19.99 trendy jeans from Target as I am about a new pair of Choos. I know those jeans are going to have their 15 minutes of fame, but a good pair of shoes are an investment that will stay with you forever. I love designers for inspiration, but if I can find it at a great price and good quality, I’m not going to turn my nose up at it just because it doesn’t have a high-end name attached. I will, however, get up at the crack of dawn and battle a crowd of crazed shoppers to lock down a new pair of YSL shoes at whatever percent off I can find.

What’s the last fashion line you just had to fill your closet with?
I’m absolutely obsessed with Alexis. It’s a locally designed line and it’s basically all I’ve worn since Art Basel. Pants, dresses, swimsuits — she just gets the Miami girl’s fashion needs.
