The Catwalks Hit Miami With Funkshion Fashion Week

By Fawnia Soo Hoo

Now that the New York/London/Milan/Paris fashion month has concluded, it’s time to set our sights on the sunnier, more relaxed locale of Miami — more specifically Funkshion Fashion Week Miami Beach, which runs from October 19 to 22 at the Setai in South Beach and the Moore Building in the Design District. The fashion-filled week kicks off with a runway show by New York-based designer Isabel Toledo. The fashion designer and artist husband Ruben will also be awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award honor. While tickets to the opening night festivities are gone-zo at this point, the rest of the events are still open to the public and, best of all, free.

The itinerary for the following three days includes the Red Dress Fashion show featuring designs by Oscar de la Renta, Nicole Miller and Donna Karan. (Limited tix still available — hurry!) The gowns will be auctioned off after the show to benefit The American Heart Association. Also on the catwalk schedule: Miami International University of Art and Design (MIUAD), Sarahi House of Fashion, Toxic Sadie Swimwear, Xela by Nora Sahraoui, and Eco Swim, which closes the week on October 22.

Another event to mention: The Andrew Charles runway show on October 21. Andrew Charles is the new Macy’s exclusive collaboration between Andy Hilfiger (Tommy’s brother) and Aerosmith lead singer and American Idol judge, Steven Tyler. Plus, Steven and daughter Chelsea are the faces of the brand. While there’s no word on an impromptu cameo from the putty-lipped Aerosmith frontman, Andy Hilfiger will, however, be performing during his show along with drummer Marky Ramone and Appalachian indie-rockers Click Clack Boom.

All the events are free, just RSVP (soon) to funkshionmiami@funkshion.com. Lastly, a dress code FYI courtesy of the Sun Sentinal: No shorts of flip flops allowed. Oh, Miami.
